Welcome back to Hero’s Journey! Last time, our protagonist, the charismatic esports commentator James Bardolph, took his first steps in our rig. On F1 2021, he was taught the basics by G2 Esports racer and coach Nils Naujoks . The two men have returned for the next episode, so you’d better cancel all your appoinments and watch this video right now:

Back to Silverstone

Mastery is all about repetition, so James and Nils hit the road again at Silverstone. Before we let James jump into the rig, Nils shows him what driving on the legendary British track should look like – well, almost! Another key to becoming better at something is staying calm and not putting yourself under too much pressure. “Try to beat your time by not even trying,” the G2 pro advises.

Well, that’s harder than one might imagine… but James wouldn’t be our hero if he was disheartened by contradictory slices of wisdom! The first few attempts don’t go as smooth as James would have liked and he quickly identifies the problem: He keeps forgetting the particularities of certain corners.

Memorising the track

One thing that is often underestimated is how impactful knowing a racetrack is. And with ‘knowing’ we mean, you actually have to learn every single corner, every single straight, no, even every single pebble by heart. This may sound a little drastic, but its benefits are just as remarkable.

Every single circuit is unique and requires even seasoned first-timers to get familiar with it. To help with the memorisation, we play a little game! James and Nils try to draw the layout of Silverstone from their memory. How close are their drawings to the actual track?

If you want to know the answer to this questions, and see whether James can take even more time off the clock this time, head to the video straight away!
