Julian Tan was born and raised in Malaysia. But moved to the UK for his Engineering studies at the world-renowned universities of Cambridge and Oxford. He completed his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Oxford and even graduated from the University of Cambridge with a PhD in Composites Engineering.
Although his CV doesn’t appear to have much to do with racing, it actually helped to pave the way for what was to come. His thesis on carbon fiber laminates pushed him in the right direction, as this is the material F1 cars are made from. After his studies, Julian first went on to become a columnist and then a consultant before he ended up doing what we know him for today.
Pulling the strings behind the scenes
Since mid-2017 Julian has been working for Formula 1, taking over the role of Head of Esports in 2018. With this position, he is the focal point of major decision and change of the F1 Esports Series. He is one of the unsung heroes of the sim racing world, devoted to bringing everyone the enjoyment of a good race. He also assisted with the move into the mobile market with the F1 mobile racing league.
Julian Tan was our guest in the newest Nitro Nights Episode. Tom Deacon had an in-depth chat with him, so be sure to check it out.
