The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is the leading organization of electric car racing in the world. After their esports success last year with the ABB Formula E #RaceAtHome Challenge 2020, the ante has just been upped. This year, Formula E will hold the newly-founded Formula E Accelerate Esports Championship on rFactor2.

While the esports efforts of Formula E featured real-life drivers last time around, sim racers will be able to qualify for this year's series. In a time trial qualifying challenge, players can showcase their talent with the Gen2 Formula E car on the virtual track of 'Berlin - Tempelhof' in rFactor2. The qualification will be open until January 13.

The fastest racers will then be drafted to the 12 real-life Formula E teams. Each team can choose two of their favorites to carry their name into the first season of the Formula E Accelerate Esports Championship.

The prize money should be an excellent incentive to get a grid of talented individuals together. In total, $100,000 will be distributed between the racers in the final standings. Additionally, the competition winner gets the chance to drive a real-life Formula E car.

The schedule is yet to be announced, but we can be sure to have an update on that very soon after the qualifiers have finished. With this championship, Formula E further steps towards esports in their pursuit to get their brand across to a broader audience.
