Becoming a sim racer can seem like an almost impossible task at first – in between getting used to the game of choice, finding a car to drive and grasping for the fastest lap times, it is fairly easy to lose track of what to pay attention to most. That is exactly why sim racing content creator Jaroslav ‘Jardier‘ Honzík sat down to show just how to get started playing Assetto Corsa Competizione in our latest tutorial.
The stepping stones to success
A beginner in Assetto Corsa Competizione should ideally choose a car that offers relatively forgiving handling. For this, Jardier recommends an Aston Martin, a Bentley or maybe a Mercedes-Benz. However, as a general rule, players should try out several cars to see what fits their intuitions best. So, in terms of the right car, the following applies: “Follow your gut!”
Fortunately, ACC is not a beginner-unfriendly game and helps rookies with their set-up: a simple safe-preset for beginners tackles frustration right away. Besides this, Jardier has some general tips for the driving itself. According to him, the racer’s inputs to the car should correspond to how the car is physically capable of moving – meaning that harsh braking or steering won’t lead to pole position. Transitions between the driver’s inputs should ideally be smooth and not hectically executed.
Last but not least, the most important point: practice makes perfect. Getting used to sim racing or even just a new racing game takes time, so don’t work yourself up over not being the greatest racer right away. A lot of nuances to racing, like the perfect tire management or pressure set-ups, just require some time for trial-and-error experiences that will finally lead to the desired success. Just keep going!
