Last week saw the gaming industry divert its attention to Las Vegas for the DICE Awards. Highlighting the very best in the gaming industry, this awards show dubbed Design Innovate Communicate Entertain featured a racing game category.
Among the nominees were the latest of the annually released Codemasters F1 game series, F1 22. It went up against the newest Need for Speed game, Unbound with its unique cartoon-esque cutscenes and effects. The final game nominated for the best racing game of the year category was Gran Turismo 7, despite its rocky start.
Among those making the decision for each title were the more than 33,000 members of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. And results of the committee’s decision released last week, on 26 February.
Gran Turismo 7: Worthy of its title?
Beating its competition, Gran Turismo 7 ended a frantic week with an important gaming award. After a major update to the game adding PSVR2 support and giving its players a taste of the Sophy AI system. GT7 won the Racing Game of the Year DICE Award for 2023.
With very few games releasing last year, Polyphony certainly didn’t have the largest competition on its way to its third DICE Award. Both the original game and third iteration of the Gran Turismo franchise claimed the award in their day. In fact, if the largest releases alongside GT were the annual F1 title and an already forgotten NFS game, it clearly hasn’t been the biggest year.
Perhaps 2023 will offer a great selection of titles. EA is set to unveil its first WRC game since taking over the license this year. Turn 10 Studios is still looking to release the next Forza Motorsport game later in 2023. And Rennsport is sure to reach a public Beta version by Christmas. Let’s hope for a more competitive DICE Awards show in 12 months time.
