Formula 1 introduces a new female-only qualifier for their F1 Esports Pro Exhibition, called Women’s Wildcard. The format is open for every female driver. From 3-9 May, aspiring racers can set flying lap times in F1 2020 to show their skills. The fastest talents will then be included in the Pro Exhibition in May, where the 10 official F1 Esports organisations assemble their driver teams from a pool of the best sim racers in the world.

Inspiring future racers

The reason behind the introduction of the Women’s Wildcard is the lack of female drivers in the esports scene. So far, no women have ever competed in the F1 Esports Series. Formula 1 hopes to inspire more female motorsports fans to start sim racing and engage in a competitive environment. As representation and having a role-model to look up to are important factors in a competitive scene, F1 aims to change the current status. It is also important to create a safe space where women feel comfortable to race against each other.
