Front-wheel Drive Fun: 2024 Cupra & Hyundai TCR Released

It is not always about high top speeds: Two brand-new 2024-spec TCR cars released by @Fuzo for Assetto Corsa more than prove that - these Touring Cars are an immensely fun mod addition to the sim.

Touring Car racing used to be wildly popular. Looking back at the 1990s in particular, there were DTM and BTCC, first in the Group A era, then followed by the Supertouring years - racing fans all over the world loved these and other series. Since then, popularity has declined, although the WTCC years are also full of fond memories for many racing fans.

After the final WTCC season in 2017, TCR regulations were introduced, which changed the name of the series to WTCR. TCR cars are used in numerous series around the world and can even be found on the grid in the Nürburgring-based NLS as well as the 24-hour race at the Green Hell.

Cupra vs. Hyundai

@Fuzo now brings two TCR cars to Assetto Corsa as they race in 2024: The Cupra Leon Competición TCR and the Hyundai Elantra N TCR are now available in our download section - and they are remarkably well done.

Most importantly, they are extremely fun to drive. Being FWD cars, a bit of a different driving style is needed, of course, but it also makes the cars relatively friendly handling-wise. Taming them is not the problem, but it is difficult to extract maximum performance from them. Committed drivers who are not afraid to send it over sausage kerbs are usually rewarded, as keeping momentum up is crucial.

As a result, the cars feel right at home at smaller tracks like Oschersleben, where they provide a very engaging experience. Trying to optimize your line through the chicane before the back straight always makes you want to return for another lap to possibly grab a tenth or two again.

When testing the Leon and the Elantra against AI drivers, a healthy dose of Touring Car contact when battling for position works well, as you would expect. That elbows-out style of running them allows for close fights on track. Keep your eyes peeled for future Racing Club events in these - the 2024-spec TCR cars should be a perfect fit for them.

Keen-eyed AC racers may have observed Cupra TCR cars in our download section before the 2024 model released. @Fuzo actually has three different versions of the car available, namely the original released in April of 2021, the 2022-spec variant released in December of 2022, and the 2024 version. The Hyundai, on the other hand, is an all-new release.

Considering you're a fully signed up Historic Sim Studios shill I'm shocked that you dare to write articles about anything else. Won't they cut off your under the table payments for promoting other modders?

To be serious though I look forward to reading these AC mod write-ups. They often are just the needed motivation to do something new and fun.

Great article, some more interesting fun facts and an additional interesting content to drive and race in Assetto Corsa.
In most, if not all other titles, one of the challenge is the limited content.
In AC one of the challenge is what to drive and where. This morning I was at Fuji 68 racing different vintage grid for a couple of hours and I did not even scratch the surface of what is available and possible just in that category that is almost absent of any other offering.
AC is like those Russian dolls, there is always an other level of interest to access, it feels like the only issue is time.

I have tried both of these and they have different characteristics but both are fun. I hope they increase the grid with more TCR cars.

A tread on some mods in AC that everyone can enjoy for free would not been complete without a few post from some educated and knowledgeable RF2 fan boys telling us, pleabean AC user, that something else “better” exist. Just in case, you know, someone on the Sim racing planet, was not be aware of RF2 and the magical content.
Thank you to those people for not letting us blindly enjoy anything else than the so superior RF2. The 20,000 daily AC user will always be thankful for your dedication.

you seem to be a good man, pass the message to the millions forza and GT players please.

I agree that rF2 BTCCs are superior. But these TCRs aren't bad too.

"aren't bad too" is not enough good for my standards ;), since I drive iRacing, ACC, raceroom or rF2/LMU, cant play with anything else.

About Assetto, I'm very hyped for AC EVO, AC is too much outdated for me on my simucube 2....

Not maybe for your standars but believe or not, real drivers from real TCR series - Comtoyou Racing, Fullinrace Academy, Express Auto, Janik Motorsport and much more are using or used my Cupra for training, not iRacing TCR, no rf2 TCR, not Raceroom TCR. Just saying :)

Just a fun fact, gMotor is known for not simulating FWD cars very well :D

Btw, you are aware that you are comparing something you have not even tried, made by a hobyist in his spare time, to paid commercial product, right? :D

If you whish, I can send you my True drive profile for AC to try because i have SC2 Pro as well and I think AC ffb is one of the best in the market ;)

Honestly, just ignore him, one of the most persistent and annoying trolls on this site. Thanks for your efforts, these cars are great. I play RF2 as well, and these run them pretty close IMO.

Yeah, I know :) To be honest, I like rf2 as well, just dont like the ffb under throttle on those BTCC cars, and the play in the middle of the steering range... BTW, we are playing with the idea of converting these two TCR cars to rfactor 2 with Advanced Simulations Modding team... But I am not sure if there is a demand for it, rf2 is quite dead...

yes, I think its very dead with LMU now out tbh. The devs show no sign of wanting to do any more on it. And I totally agree with you on the play in the middle of the steering range. RF2 is not perfect at all, none of them are.

This would be great! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease :notworthy:

You told that the gMotor engine would be known for "not simulating FWD cars quite well" - I wouldn't have expected that. Isn't gMotor engine used in Race07 and also Raceroom, which were the kings of FWD racing?

I have to say that I was influenced most on FWD cars by Raceroom.. I love(d) the WTCC/WTCR content when I started Simracing.. they always felt right. Instead the FWD cars in Assetto Corsa always felt out of place.. more like a 4WD car (looking to the Audi TT Cup Car), also most Mods felt somehow very different to Raceroom's WTCC/WTCR cars or the rFactor-2-BTCC - both old mod cars and current officially licensed cars.

Your Cupra-Cars and the Supertouring Mod by VRC are the only FWD Cars in Assetto which I enjoyed driving and are closer to rF2/R3E-feeling.

I also would expect to see some minor differences in racing BTCC and TCR cars, just because they are not build under the same regulations. There is a TCR-Mod for rFactor2.. although these cars, which also are paid modcontent, feel more like the most FWD-Mods of Assetto mentioned before.. drivable yes, but not very responsive or exciting in any point.

Really looking forward to the mod being converted to rFactor 2 - it's not dead, just sleeping

You like ACC over AC, that pretty much says everything about your order of game choice lol.

I agree with this post a lot, as it reflects my own preferences and what I believe to be true.
I would argue that since RF2 already have official content of a very similar nature, your and your team time would be more efficiently spent on additional content to AC. There is much more to the TCR grid than those two marvelous cars you shared with us.:sneaky:

I wrote short essay about additional TCR cars from me at Elantra discussion so I won't repeat myself... It is quite dificult in my conditions :D
