How One Announcement Quadrupled Forza Horizon 4's Player Base

It is exactly one month until Forza Horizon 4 will no longer be available to purchase online, and yet its player base seems stronger than ever. Then again, its growth is no doubt due to its imminent doom.

Back in June 2024, Playground Games and Microsoft announced that the fourth entry to popular open world racing game franchise, Forza Horizon 4 would be leaving online store fronts by the end of the year. In fact, the game set in the North of the UK will no longer be available to purchase from Steam or the Microsoft Store from 14 December.

Well, that announcement clearly got racers panicking as recent months have seen a dramatic increase in player numbers on Steam. If you want to join the herd ploughing through dry stone walls and launching over Edinburgh Castle, you had better be quick to secure your copy of the game.

Forza Horizon 4 On The Up, And Its Way Out

Following the announcement of its delisting some five months ago, Forza Horizon 4 experienced a major period of growth in Steam player numbers. In fact, our monthly series of the Most Played Racing Games on Steam clearly tracked the title's gain in popularity.

Prior to the news, FH4 sat at a respectable average player base of around 4,300 people, as evident in May's round up of Steam figures. But just one month later, that figure had grown to over 9,200 players at any one time with a peak of over 75,000 in the month of June 2024, an all-time record for the game.

By July, the now-six-year-old title was the most-played racing game on Steam, out-doing the likes of Assetto Corsa, BeamNG and its successor, Forza Horizon 5. And whilst other delisting stories concerning The Crew 2 took the spotlight away from the open world Forza racer, the British destination still attracts a great deal of players with average player numbers still exceeding the 10,000 mark.

Clearly, fans of the game voted with their wallets and their time immediately following the news of Forza Horizon 4's delisting. It comes alongside a long list of other games falling by the wayside like theProject CARS franchise and the original The Crew's disappearance from even owners' libraries.

Can I Continue Playing FH4?

Yes, despite falling off virtual - and physical - shelves, those that already own Forza Horizon 4 will still have access to all of its game modes with online servers remaining open and the single player mode obviously available.

Whilst the game will still cycle through seasons each week following its current monthly rotor, those that enjoy the playlists and their seasonal challenges will be disappointed. Playground Games will no longer curate Festival Playlists for Forza Horizon 4, giving players far less to do after completing the main progression of its career.

What do you make of games being delisted from storefronts and potentially disappearing from libraries? Let us know in the comments and join the discussion in our Forza Horizon forum!

Do some research or just do once yourself before posting completely misleading information next time.
Its in a hidden and restricted folder and other users cannot access it.
It's NOT in a hidden folder like other UWPs or Windows Apps. It's in XBOXGames folder.
e.g. if you'll have to reinstall your windows and though the game is on another HDD/SSD, you'll have to download all your MS Games again. With a Steam installation you don't have to.
You will not have to download all your MS Games again. Just double click the exe of the game in that NOT HIDDEN XBOXGames folder and you'll see XBOX app verifying the files.

Allways buy via steam, i have FH3 and FH4 on the microsoft store and its imposible to play they give me some error and just close. A real pain in the azz is that xbox tool they have. they tried to aglomerate all in one tool and its a real superb mess.

Buying with microsoft is a great adventure.

I cant play those games that i bought , u will feel lost in the bot chat and the ms agents are lost cuz they know their game manager is losing oil for all sides...a real shame.

Steam is a monopoly? yeah but it works!

PD: of course i play FH3 FH4 offline cracked cuz i can NOT open my payed games with my favourite brand: Mierdisoft (imagine what means mierdi in spanish lads, just change the last i for an a and u will get the translation)

Installed on steam is far better.

You can choose the installation folder of games in the Xbox app for quite a long time now.

thats maybe new
Under Windows 10 it all was in an UWP folder , not hidden but restricted.
Maybe latest Win 11 installiations changed that.
Nevertheless. I bought some of my MS games again after ending of my several years XBox Live subscription and everything works way easier.

Breh, I only found this article the next day because I saw "FH4" on Steam and thought it RETURNED. But I must have been confused with when the discount ended back when that announcement was made. - I seriously thought it was already gone, but that time is still coming. - I just wish it was the case, that it was removed and Microsoft/Xbox went like "Well, actually..." and just kept selling it. - That could still happen, but then again, since we've seen that they've no remorse cutting down on studios (which of course is a whole other thing, involving a lot more money in terms of cost etc.) I kinda doubt they'll care about taking down a single product, even if it makes them "free money".

And by the way, I don't understand why they'll keep running servers while they can sell it anymore... Kinda weird, cause that's often the issue, in that it's too costly to run servers for little sale or because they have servers to run for other/newer games as well and so they tend to take the product down including the servers. So now they can't take advantage of selling more copies and either must be running at a loss (even though it might not hurt them) and perhaps they're hoping the player-base will dwindle quickly so that they can finally shutter the servers. - Though, perhaps the other Forza-sales might make up for server-costs.

That said, it's probably also a licensing-thing, which is often the case with car-games or anything that has brands like with sports as well. They might WANT to keep selling the game, but can't because they'd have to start a bunch of contracts with companies again, which is probably a big and costly hassle. And now that the contracts are up, it CAN'T be sold anymore. - It's also problematic considering they couldn't even change the game that easily. They could attempt to scrub any branding or whatever, but there's probably rights over whole designs as well. Good luck changing a game like this without practically destroying it, as well as needing a lot of time and effort and thus money. - These games are so screwed.

Yet again modern gaming and it's faults.

Not really. They're probably taking it down due to expiring licenses. They CAN'T sell it anymore, whether it's digital or physical or anything, unless they make up new contracts. - This could've been an old a.f. game from the '90s, if we pretend they had contracts running for like three decades and they were about to expire soon, they'd have to stop selling those "good old games". And they do stop selling old games... Are you seeing any classic 'Need For Speed' copies new in store anywhere?... No, not physically, not digitally, not anywhere, because they're not allowed to sell them with the brands and also music that's in them. - This has been a thing for decades.

I know about expiring licenses and i hate it, and i think that the copyright and licenses system should be reworked to allow digital copies to be sold post license expiring in the same way you can keep and buy used copies of a game or a movie that hasn't been made for years.

Still, this is microsoft, i find it at least slightly weird that they are making the decision based on monthly revenue.

If only it had wheel support. I did get it for like £10 a couple months ago, but with a rig and so many other sims taking advantage of it I find it hard to step out and go back to a controller.

I bet there's a hack somewhere but you shouldn't have to hack wheel support in to a driving game, not on a PC, not for a game released in the last 10 years.

This highlights a significant problem with Game disappearance: There is no effort to preserve old games. But what surprises me most is how little anyone cares. It seems that the younger generation would instead purchase a new game as often as possible, with a thirst for new content all the time.

Yes same here, I bought it and tried that hack to get wheel support but it was so cumbersome to setup I uninstalled. Maybe one day modders will figure it out..

I actually just finally purchased it today thinking it would probably work, but first I had issues with getting the game full-screen properly, which... somehow I got it to do but don't even really know how. - Mind, I'm on a Linux-distro, so it probably didn't know what to do (still, I didn't have this issue with about any other game).
But also, the wheel is not detected at all, despite sure being on Linux, but also that it simply works in most others games such as those by Codemasters or say rFactor 2, though not RaceRoom for some reason either, and the wheel I have is even an Xbox-style wheel (not even something higher-end). - But then, yes, I'm using some open-source drivers that probably don't cover everything. - But even so, at least RaceRoom detects the wheel and pedals, just not properly, but it's absolutely dead in FH4 for some reason.

There IS indeed a "hack", or a program rather, that you can install on Windows, and there are also tweaks you can do to some settings in the .exe, as well as the registry, to supposedly make it work. - But that doesn't apply to me then. - But then again, having searched the internet, I see a LOT of posts about issues with wheels, even on consoles, so the support... while it should be there considering they do have a list of profiles built in, as well as the tab for it in the settings, is very iffy, even for FH5 and I believe even the latest "Motorsport".

I didn't get it to work today, sadly... I might have to resort to a gamepad if I can't find a way, but I don't feel it helps the experience for a game like this. It's not like a kart-racer or something, it's definitely capable of being a "sim-cade", along the lines of "GRID" and "DiRT" or something like that.
