The teaser video shows a new logo which resembles a crown. The letters S and C are hidden in it. This confirms several reports from spring 2020. Publisher Nacon had saved the name rights for Test Drive Solar Crown in April. Solar Crown refers to a competition in Test Drive Unlimited 2.
The text of the tweet mentions the Nacon Connect event on July 7, where the game is expected to be revealed. Nacon is the new name of BigBen Interactive, who already published racing games like Overpass, WRC 9, or TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge 2.
A long history
Test Drive is one of the oldest racing game franchises on the market. The first game was released in 1987 for Amiga, Atari ST, and C-64.
Since then, the game received many sequels and spin-offs. The character of the game mostly remained the same. The players race in exotic performance cars, fighting against opponents or a time limit. During the race, they also have to avoid traffic and police.
Especially Test Drive Unlimited and its successor set new standards in open world racing in 2006 and 2011.
Throughout its long history, the franchise had changed its developers and publishers multiple times. The latest edition, Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends, was developed by Slightly Mad Studios, who are also known for Project Cars.
In March 2020, the news became public the 21st edition of the franchise is currently under development by Nacon. It remains unclear whether it is going to be the next iteration of Test Drive Unlimited or if it will take a different direction.
Nacon Connect might bring us answers for all open questions. The event takes place on July 7 at 7 PM CEST. You can watch it live on Nacon’s YouTube channel.
