Porsche Virtual Roads can scan your favourite roads

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to race full speed along your daily commute? Now you can find out thanks to Porsche and Way Ahead Technologies.

Mod developers on video games have for years attempted to meticulously recreate race tracks from the ground up. Whether it be the most famous permenant road courses in the world, some fairly unknown hidden gems or even Rainbow Road from Mario Kart. If you can think of it, there’s probably a mod of it somewhere for you to download.

You can even find public roads that you can drive, our very own Ermin Hamidovic even drove a mod of the Pacific Coast Highway on Assetto Corsa.

But have you ever wanted to scan the roads you drive on your daily commute in real time? Well if you’re fortunate enough to own a Porsche, you can infact do just that! Drivers can sync up an app on their smart phone – which they can just stick to the windscreen – to their car and it will in real time scan the roads ahead and upload it to a video game.

With this software, the time it would take to perfectly recreate the roads of your choice will be drastically reduced from the amount of time time that manually constructing it would take. The artificial intelligence is able to recognise trees and safety railing among other obstacles, and import them all over to Assetto Corsa, where the user can then drive that same bit of road again.

This opens up a world of possibilities, maybe we could see this technology become the norm and have real race tracks and other environments be added to more video games. It could certainly be a central aspect for our dream open world driving game.
