Our iRacing expert Emily Jones is playing the game for many many years now and she still gets the same question: Is iRacing still worth it, even in 2023?
Out of the many racing sims available on the market, iRacing stands out as having remained prominent in the scene ever since its debut nearly 15 years ago. It features some of the most accurate scans of racetracks from around the world, and what many believe to be the most advanced and thorough handling physics in any racing game.
But, with all the high quality content does come a catch, it’s rather expensive. The service comes with a subscription model, with a single month coming to $13 and the majority of the cars and tracks having to be paid for individually, coming to $12 and $15 respectively.
Many people who want to preserve as much money as possible will wonder if it’s even worth it. Our resident professional esports racer Emily Jones will answer those questions. Having played iRacing for many years and even winning the 2021 Porsche TAG Heuer Esports All Star championship, it’s safe to say Emree is pretty well versed in the matter.
What do You Get?
Once subscribed to iRacing, a lot of the base game content is usable to race whilst you try to progress your way out of the rookie class. Some of the cars immediately available include the Formula Vee and Mazda MX-5 Cup, two of the most popular cars to race with on the sim. These remain fan-favourites even among those who are able to compete in other disciplines like open wheelers, GT cars, dirt, oval, stock cars, rallycross and even Trophy Truck racing.
As for tracks, plenty of prominent circuits are available for free. The likes of Laguna Seca, Oulton Park, Lime Rock and Okayama are all accessible to the player right away. However, it’s certainly worth checking once you break out of rookies to see which tracks are used on iRacing‘s own ranked schedules.
As of now, new iRacing memberships are 40% off. A one year membership would typically cost $110, which is roughly just over $9 per month, but right now it’ll cost $66 or around $5.50 per month.
