What happened to GTR 3?

Will GTR 3 ever see the light of day? Our very own ChampionJoe takes a look at whether we will see it released.

GTR 2 was the last installment in the series which featured content from the FIA GT Championship 2003-04 seasons. The FIA GT Championship is what we now know as GT World Challenge that is portrayed in Assetto Corsa Competizione.

GTR 3 has been spoken about as a concept since as early as 2010, in which SimBin Studios initially claimed that it would be set to be released the following year. That then went nowhere and SimBin then expressed in early 2017 that the game would then release in 2018 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Fast forward five years though, and still no word.

So what’s new?

There was a lot of talk that the game would have elements of the FIA World Endurance Championship, although now with Motorsport Games developing a Le Mans game it would appear that the sole focus of the game could perhaps never be WEC related.

With what little information we have available about what the game’s focus will be, it probably didn’t help when in March 2021, SimBin Studios UK announced they were closing their Discord server.

Time will tell as to whether GTR 3 is dead and buried or if it will be a pheonix rising from the ashes.
