Episode 44 | Marco Massarutto on Endurance Racing

Marco Massarutto of Kunos Simulazioni joins Nitro Nights to talk about endurance racing and Assetto Corsa along with Steffi.

In this week’s episode of Nitro Nights, Steffi talks to Marco Massarutto, co-founder and executive manager of Kunos Simulazioni, the developers behind the Assetto Corsa games. Marco discusses endurance esports racing with Steffi, including the challenges of developing a game capable of running 24-hour races.

Developing an Endurance Racing Game

Marco recounts how he developed an interest in the discipline and especially in the legendary Le Mans 24-hour race. As a result of this passion, and that of the community, he felt that the original Assetto Corsa game was lacking in this regard. As such, in development for Assetto Corsa Competizione, it was decided that night racing and the other core facets of an endurance race would be in the game “at any cost”.

Of course, developing a game which can run 24-hour races is a tricky task. Marco points out that, above all else, having a reliable game is key. This means that the game cannot crash or experience other major issues, even if it has been running for an entire day non-stop. The Italian describes this as a huge challenge, emphasising how much testing and bug fixing such an undertaking entails. On top of the software being reliable, the servers and netcode must be up to scratch as well.

Tips for Newcomers

When asked if Assetto Corsa Competizione was the best game for new endurance racers, Marco noted that there were a variety of other options available. However, he also mentioned that Assetto Corsa Compeitizione was designed with endurance racing specifically in mind. Marco also provided some tips for new drivers looking to pick up endurance esports racing, including an emphasis on consistency and reliability as a driver rather than simply raw pace.

Finally, Marco signed off by talking about the future of the Assetto Corsa franchise. What’s in store for Assetto Corsa Competizione in the future? And what new content for the game can be expected soon? Find out what news Marco has to share about the franchise in this episode of Nitro Nights!
