GPU thoughts.

I just wanted to share my thoughts, my total and complete joy a new GPU has brought me. I bought a new pc which has a 3080, and OMFG.
It's amazing! How good does Assetto Corsa look!

If you are considering it, undecided...do it! I've done nothing special but my AC is now my best looking sim. That awesome feeling, all excited, I've got it again!

Sometimes the world is brilliant!

That's the card I expect to purchase (when the prices go down). I have discarded the 4800 because it woudn't fit inside my case and I would have to buy a new power supply. I'm using VR (Oculus Rift S), with most settings to max or very high (1080Ti). With the 3080 I expect to be able to use supersampling for a crisper and cleaner image.

Yes!!! AC has this good mix of enough effects to look fancy enough while often having this crispness of textures that make it look "real" instead of too sleek for reality.
AMS2 for example overall has better graphics, but the tarmac doesn't look as rough and crisp as AC does on most tracks.

You should wait and check the real dimensions!
Only the custom 4090's are super long, like the Asus strix.
Many of the custom 3080's aren't much shorter though!

The actual gpu's are very short though btw. Most cooling designs simply have a big fat heat-fins stack at the end.
The actual graphics card of the 4090 is not even as long as the 3060ti founders edition. But it has 10cm or more cooling fins at its end.

4080 might be shorter than the 3080! The 4090 founders edition is already overkill cooling wise, so maybe the 4080 will be more balanced.
The 40 cards seem to be more efficient at not-full-load. Similar to undervolted 30 series (my 3080 dropped from 320W to 210W at 75% load after undervolting it!)

I had no idea how many filters there are! Is there a clear standout, the obvious choice?
I'm just using sol at the moment, but as I have masses of processing power now I think I will go just a bit crazy :)

The filters only use what the game offers. So apart from some visual tweaking, you won't gain or lose more than a few fps.

I don't use Sol or the new pure (from Peter boese's patreon), but if I got it right there's some on the fly filter changing now to adjust the visuals to the current weather.

No idea if you need to use the sol filter for that to work or how it works at all honestly.

I personally use the "natural mod filter", one of the most downloaded resources in the AC section.

He provides quite a few. Depending on your other settings etc, some might looks super washed out, others might looks absolute awesome.
I really like his work and it's also one of the few filters that gain you some fps, while looking best :)

While playing AC i even let the 3080 work @60% only (with afterburner)
I can still maxed eveything out CSP, SOL... and become more than enouhg fps (non VR !)
Try it out, you save about 1/3 electricity and loose only few fps.
(It can vary from game to game. All newer and demanding games, i play at 80%, until now no one realy needed running the GPU@100%)
So YES the 3080 is still a beast for me playing @ UWHQD 3440x1440

Yep, it's insane that nvidia didn't adjust their voltage curve. You can save even up to 50% power!

Are you using a manual undervolting/clocking curve or do you simply reduce the power limit?
I'm asking because limiting the power leads to spiking power draw (It's what made some PSUs shut off in the early phase of the release until driver updates made it calmer).
When the card hits the power limit, it throttles down and when it then boosts back up, it spikes quite massively.

But if you limit the voltage/clockspeed manually without hitting the power limit, it's perfectly smooth and a lot easier for the hardware.

"Optimum Tech" has some nice undervolting guides on Youtube.

Btw, the 4090 shows massively improved power draw at not-full-load scenarios! Compared to a stock 30xx card, it only draws 40-60% of the power. Basically like a perfectly undervolted 3090 but scaling up to 1.8x the performance, lol.

UWHQD 3440x1440 same as me, I'm only running at 60hz as I just couldn't see any benefit after this.
Be happy and keep it like that! Once you notice the difference too much, you can't go back and things get way more complicated :whistling:

I'm not going anywhere so deep!
The situation is that electricity is expensive, so it's just sensible to conserve where you can.
I actually set myself a daily budget for how much I can spend using my pc. I noticed that 60hz looks OK, I can race and be happy. 200hz costs a LOT more, nearly 4 times as much!

So far i am just reducing the power Limit.
Because i am switching from 60-80% from Game to Game.

I know undervolting would be the better way.

You could do different undervolting profiles and map hotkeys to the profiles. 3 key hotkeys are available so something like alt + a + 1...5 is what I'm using. You can even instantly switch the profile when going from a country side quest into a city in RPGs :D
