Help with getting online and racing

Hi all. I've been playing about with Assetto Corsa and the content manager program for a while now. I'm not fast, but I think I'm learning how to get better. I want to learn how to get quicker round some of the UK circuits as I am trying to boost my real life skills without paying a fortune for test days etc.

What I'd like to know is:

A) where would I find good setup advice for the Renault Clio Cup car,

B) where could I get some online experience with other real drivers? The AI is fine but they do tend to either be useless or perfect so not very realistic.

I'll throw in a C) is there any cars out there that are a better replica of the Citroen Saxo or Peugeot 106? I'm racing a 106 but find the Clio us pretty close to how my car handles.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I would have thought either the Kunos Abarth 500 or Alfa Romeo Mito are the closest you would get. Much closer than a cup car unless your own car is heavily modified. I'm guessing that cup car you are using is running slick tyres for a start.

A:
If using one of those Kunos road cars you can just change tyre pressure to have optimum hot pressure (use an app like Race Essentials or Sidekick to check optimum and current pressure) and maybe tinker with camber and toe although it wont make much difference.

B:
Unfortunately the server list is full of weird **** or GT3 so I dont think you will have much luck with B. You could use RSR live timing (google it) to check lap times against your own but you will mainly find lap times set on semislicks in those cars which wont help if you are using the road tyres to best replicate your own car.

My own car is pretty well modified and I do have the option to run slicks although I'm not as yet. The cup car seems to be about 5s a lap quicker than my optimal lap so I can at least adjust and work out how my learning curve is progressing.

Seems I may have to look into buying a different game to get online and have a race against some other real-lifers then?

You should be able to find a (populated) server every now and then running the Abarth 500 Assetto Corse which is an Abarth 500 cup car running slick tyres.

Alternatively there is the S1 version of the Abarth 500 road car which has the following modifcations:

The Step1 tuned version of Abarth500 EsseEsse has non adjustable aftermarket dampers and lowered springs and an ECU reprogramming which gives a little more boost on the turbos, gaining a fair amount of power and torque.

You can drive it on semislick or street tyres. It will probably be harder to find a race server running that car than the cup car version though.

I'm surprised by your advice Andy, because you of all can race any car fast in AC.
Yes, it's probably going to be hard to find servers racing just the Abarth all day, but the car doesn't matter when improving racecraft.
If you can't race well in AC, with speed and awareness, you probably suck irl too ;)

If he wants to race the closest thing to his own car in multiplayer I'd guess one of those mentioned would be his best bet.

I tend to look for non-singlemake grids without any high end modern (or high downforce in general) race cars. I think the last time I joined one that interested me and wasnt just me in the server on my own was summer or autumn last year :roflmao:

My point is, you know the concepts of racing and to apply them without crashing out or into someone. So do I, though I'm not quite as fast. The races and leagues I've won though are due being consistent and having high awareness, avoiding bad situations and often profiting from them. Obviously it takes some speed to qualy high enough to battle for podiums amung an entire grid of skilled simracers. It's all possible to learn and practice in AC, sure many would say the same.
It does, IMO, translate directly to rl racing, if you can overcome the physical and psychological aspects of controlling a car while racing. And it doesn't really matter what car you use.

Thanks for the further replies guys. Really appreciate it.

Seeing as AC seems to be used a lot less these days, is there another program I should be looking at moving to? I don't have the finances currently, No the consistent timeslots, to get into iRacing but it looks like that is the ultimate end point as far as my sim work will go.

There used to be an organised system of racing in AC... was that RSR? Is it still going?
I think AC is still pretty popular for online racing, at least, it still pulls quite a few in for certain events at RD. We are a little short handed atm but we run events every Sun, Mon and Weds.

I noticed in the AC modding forum, that somebody is currently working on a 106. I think the guy is using a placeholder 3D model atm though, so don't hold your breath.

Thanks Denis, i'll get in touch and see if I could at least get the bodywork sort of stuck to an existing car... if that's possible? Would be cool to be able to have a version of my own car to play with hahaha.

I'll see what I can find about RSR too. Thanks.

No, you want to find SRS, Simracing system.
Also, get premium and do RD races.

AC is still the most active sim, if you look at steamspy. There might be a lot less public servers, but you want to avoid those anyway.

Oops, sorry. Yes SRS is what I meant. Couldn't quite remember, that's why I put a ? in my reply.
