More cars than pit boxes?

Hey all,
I was just wondering: I haven't actually tried this yet, but seeing as it doesn't technically stop you from doing it, I was wondering: what happens if you start a race with more cars on the grid than the denoted amount of pitboxes? Say I went to the base Zandvoort with about 20 cars (the limit's 16 or 18 right?) - what would the game do?

My understanding was that it does stop you from doing it, but by all means test it out...

The game should not let you set more AI than pitboxes -1.

OK so I went to Barcelona with '26' Panoz Abruzzis including myself (pit boxes 24). Technically it loaded the race, but it seemed to only spawn 23 AI as I made sure to start at the back, one spun off at turn 2 and it put me to 23rd place.
Guess I really do need versions of each track with enough pit boxes to replicate some races
