PT Actuator - Import Fees

Has everyone importing a PT Actuator system from China had to pay import duty fees? FedEx is charging me a $1,113.95 import duty fee for 6 servo actuators. When I questioned FedEx, they responded as shown below. Each of the 3 charges mentioned below are servo motor fees. The fees apparently should have been paid before the motors were released from customs, but they were not. I have the hardware and they are now trying to get me to pay the fee. I'm not sure what happens if I refuse to pay the fee.

"The duty rate for items classified as 8501.40.5040 is 3.3%. The rate for items of Chinese origin classified as 8501.40.5040 is an additional 25%. Minimum MPF on a shipment valued over $2,500 is $27.23. These are all values assigned by US Customs. For all Express Clearance shipments, the duty is paid at the time of entry. This is all standard procedure."

I have no idea what happens if you don't pay customs fees, but I'm assuming they either sue you, or pass your details onto the government and they take the money from you or take you to court (since it's a tax that you're refusing to pay).

Is the fee correct? I make it that the cost you paid PT would be around $3,936 if the tax is 28.3%.

Unfortunately import taxes are a thing, and something you always need to bear in mind when buying from abroad.

Okay, thought so. I will definitely pay the fee. The PT Actuator 5DOF system that I purchased is relatively inexpensive, compared to a D-Box system.
I went through this with my Simucube. Id check with PT first. It may be a fine line but i think it depends on what its used for. Industry yes but being for gaming it may be exempt. My Simucube was.

This part is important. It is not a servo drive, it is a gaming accessory that happens to have a servo in it. The wording may have confused how it should be charged.

Yes thats exactly what happened and the people checking the stuff in had no idea what it actually was so they tried to charge me as an industrial item. Luckily Sim Racing Bay got it straightened out and got my money back. It did take a few months but at least i got it back.

I tried all of those arguments and fought FedEx for 10 months, but they would not listen. PT Actuator originally submitted an invoice to customs that had 6 AC Servo motors on it. FedEx is insisting that I must pay a $1,113.95 import duty fee for these 6 motors. They just closed the complaint case that I opened with them back in February and will not listen to any more arguments from me. I questioned PT Actuator about the fee and all they commented on was the high fee being charged; they thought that it was too much. Right or wrong, I paid the fee today.

Sometimes you get stuck with little options so no judgement, it wasnt your fault.

I certainly hope PT have fixed up how they describe their gear in their invoices as it is quite unnecessary to get lumped with that because of a badly worded description.

That sucks. PT needs to make sure they list this stuff correctly so we dont get charged as industrial item.

Last time I checked, there were tariffs for servomotors larger that 1KW... those 750watt servos don't even get close... But yes, you need proper code for the customs to avoid it being classified as industrial use equipment.

The Commercial Invoice for the servo motors that PT Actuator provided US customs had the tariff and tax HS duty code on it. This is the code that customs will use to determine the fee. When I researched the code, I found the below information. The charge is apparently correct. PT Actuator needs to reclassify the servo motors sold to private individuals, if possible.

Well i am waiting for my Belt-Tensioner-System from them.

Echo sent me a .pdf with the package stickers (atleast that is what they look like) and it is written Servo-Motor in them.
