VR Issue In helmet mode

Steve Bird

Come On Williams!
Is anyone else getting this in the CART series in VR with helmet cam enabled?

If so is there any way to fix it?

Can confirm - same for me. Looks like the z-buffer on the screen is messed up or something like that

I have something to add though, and feel free to ignore this as it's the usual stuff you get on forums where someone tells you something that doesn't help answer your question at all :D

I don't own a car and ride a motorbike to work in all seasons. The helmet cam is not even close to what it's like wearing a helmet. I tried my Full Face Race legal Schuberth on immediately after and I cannot see the upper part of the helmet even when looking up and the lower part takes up less than 1/20th of the space at the bottom when looking straight ahead. Personally, I'd say don't use it as it's simply not at all realistic in it's current form

EDIT: just to add - you don't say which VR headset you are using, but I'm using the HP Reverb G1 and the visibility in that is considerably less than my bike helmet. The amount of black I can see at the bottom is about the same, but I can see the black at the top which doesn't represent the unobstructed view from my helmet. Left and right is way more restrictive in my headset as I cannot even see the sides of my helmet when I look left and right.

TL;DR - your VR headset probably doesn't even have the screen space to render any part of the helmet you could actually see if you wore one!

Cheers for the confirmation GD, My headset is and old Windows Mixed Reality Lenovo Explorer but like you say I think i will just turn helmet cam off as it does spoil the immersion when the car visor is clipping through the helmet.

I agree with @GeekyDeaks. I've also ridden motorbikes many years and the sole fact of wearing a VR headset kind of emulates the feeling and visual (sort of) that you would get from wearing a helmet. So no need to use that camera, just the normal cockpit view.

I have never wore a helmet, except when on a mototbike, but not as the driver, in the back seet, i can t actually remember the experience, but... when turning on helmet in vr - reverb g2 - it really feels off!!! So the headset on its own is the best representation of the helmet as was stated above. Also i can t explain the massive frame loss from turning this on.
I guess helmet view in vr really needs to be reworked!!

The helmet view in any SIM, both in VR and pancake, looks weird to me. In VR, it does not look realistic, at least not with my experience of wearing a helmet IRL. Wearing the VR goggles is close enough, even if not totally realistic, to driving with a helmet.
As for pancake, when using a wheel, the helmet view is just weird, as most will not drive with 2 wheels, the real one and one in game. I guess it works with a controller.

You can turn the driver arms off and wheel off in Hemet mode just like in cockpit mode.
You can also turn off the helmet in the options.
Yes, I agree, but even then you still see your wheel, but you are in the helmet on the screen, that feels weird to me.
Yes, you can turn the helmet off, but then it is not helmet view anymore. :)

The helmet view has a FOV setting too. You can adjust the view so there is no Helmet parts showing, or just a bit showing etc. The Helmet view is a bit more gpu taxing I find, but it does have some lean/yaw effects going on if that's waht you like.
