VR so ................... pixels!!!

Can not believe how many youtubers raved about VR saying it feels like your actually in the car / you can feel elevation changes / gives you phantom limb syndrome . Well I just brought it and it sucks. It does not feel like I am in the car, I do not feel elevation changes, all I see is pixels everywhere. Not sure If I have to download some sort of software to change graphical settings or do anything special to fix this pixellated mess!! Anyone got any tips for me? So far my experience has been expensive, hot, uncomfortable and far from immersive.

What are your PC specs and what have you bought?

  • Intel Core i7-7800X 3.5GHz (Skylake X / Basin Falls)
  • Asus ROG Rampage VI Apex
  • Seagate 1TB FireCuda 3.5" 7200RPM 64MB Cache SSHD Internal Hard Drive
  • Samsung 970 EVO 250 GB V-NAND M.2 PCI Express Solid State Drive
  • G.SKILL F4-AG.SKILL F4-3600C17D-16GTZR 16 GB (8 GB x 2) Trident Z RGB Series DDR4 3600 MHz
  • 1070 6GB GPU

Yeah that 1070 isn't going to have a good time. I'm running a 1080 Ti and requires compromises to balance the visual quality. Sim titles appear a lot better with supersampling, but that really pushes the the GPU. If you can use some supersampling and reduce other settings in game that will at least give you a sharp image.

What VR headset? What sims are you playing?
We can't help with settings if we don't don't know what you're working with :)

Either way: You're going to have to accept that it's never going to look as good as a monitor. The screen door effect will always be there and resolution will always be relatively poor.

Most of us say all these glowing things about the VR racing experience because we tweak what we can with AA/supersampling and accept it's shortcomings. If you can do that, you'll have a great time.
However, there are some that can't get past those limitations and focus on the negatives...

I don't agree with Jeremy regarding your 1070. You can still get it looking relatively good and have decent performance. I did for a good while with a 980Ti and a 1080.

Maybe it is not for you, I know I love my DK2 unconditionally, feel totally immerse and could not go back to pancake screen driving, I would change hobby instead.
That said, I have read what you wrote before from other people, who after a few weeks were as in love with VR that I am.
On one hand they realized they had set up issues and on the other hand got use to see thru the SD effect and immerse themselves in the experience.
After all if you can convince yourself you are driving a car looking at a monitor 27 inch screen you are more than probably able to convince your self you are driving once immerse in VR.

Oculus rift and rfactor2 so far, what exactly should I do to supersampling and AA can you explain how it works please. Thanks.

Try and use the mindset that you have a lazy pitcrew that never cleans your visor or windscreen.
I still use 980ti and looks fine to me when graphics set for 90fps.
Agree with above post AC and iracing, rf2 is poo

Give it some time. To make it run its best require some learning and experimentation.
Supesampling is one of the key ingredients.
AC is the best, not only sim but overall VR title, IMO.
But in general, yeah, drop in quality coming from good monitor setup could be shocking, as well as increased demand on HW.

Playing on a flat screen with a 2D image is much better than VR because:
  • You are not actually sitting in a real car, so why try to get the feeling that you are?
  • I spend all day with 3D vision in the real world so it's nice to give my eyes a rest and go back to 2D
  • You can get a stiff neck from looking around all the time
  • VR is cheating and offers an unfair advantage. I want to be able to sleep at night with a clear conscience
  • I spent ages aligning the Jessica Alba posters on my bedroom wall and I want to be able to see them while racing
  • Depth perception is probably how Satan tempted Adam and Eve to eat that apple
  • The sensation of speed with no consequence in VR makes me a more dangerous driver in the real world
  • I paid for a bloody videogame, not an immersive experience
  • Consistently nailing apexes gets boring

RF2 is perfectly fine in VR, what you need to remember is a VR HMD is more hungry than a flat screen monitor, 2x as hungry as it's rendering to two screens.

Lower your expectations, lower you settings and work your way upwards to find a balance that suits you. Saying that VR is not for everyone, so in the end you may find out it's not for you...or like many of us you wont be able to go back to flat screen!

I encourage you to use the search functionality, it's there for a reason ;) - you would come across this handy thread: https://www.racedepartment.com/threads/vr-and-sim-racing-a-guide-to-setting-up.131806/

On that thread I posted this handy video:

Project cars 2 has by far the best vr graphics and options I run 1.2 super sampling with every thing on ultra, also use a bit of sharpening as well and it looks stunning. I have tried rf2/AC/iracing and they all look like garbage in comparison.
