9 GTA Online vehicles based on racing cars

THE NASCAR TRIBUTE The Declasse Hotring Sabre is quite strongly based on a NASCAR stock car, specifically the Chevrolet Lumina first generation stock car that legendary NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt raced. With a multitude of different liveries, you could make it look like Earnhardt’s 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games Silver car, Darrell Waltrip’s 1984 Budweiser car, or even Ricky Bobby’s car from Talledega Nights. To have your own Hotring Sabre, it will set you back $830,000 before you go to the mod shop to make it even faster. THE RALLY KING The Desert Raid is a trophy truck-esque vehicle that you would typically see compete in the likes of the Dakar. In fact, it strongly resembles the Red Bull SMG Buggy that Carlos Sainz competed in the 2014 edition of the rally raid. Its rear end is taken from the Ford Ranger T6 Rally Raid which is probably why the in-game brand for this car is Vapid, which is the GTA world’s equivalent of Ford. To buy your own Desert Raid, you will have to invest $695,000 and then a bit more to upgrade it. THE GROUP C ICON The Annis S80RR is an endurance race car based strongly on the Nissan R90C that raced in early 90s as part of the legendary Group C category. It also has elements taken from the Jaguar XJR-9. However, if you so fancy, you can make the car resemble other cars from the Group C era by changing the colour and applying different liveries, including the Sauber-Mercedes C9, the Jägermeister Porsche 962 and one is even fairly similar to those iconic Martini liveries. This car is one of the fastest in the very popular Supers class, but it comes at the hefty price of $2,575,000, again before you add any modifications. SALUTING ITALIAN ICONS Lampadati is Rockstar’s equivalent of a multitude of Italian brands, including but not limited to Alfa Romeo, Maserati, De Tomaso and most importantly, Lancia. No surprises there as the Tropos Rallye is very clearly a Lancia Stratos, the iconic revolutionary car that took the rally world by storm in the mid-1970s. Whilst not the best in the very stacked Sports class, it is one of the ultimate choices for racing on dirt as the car loses next to none of its traction off road, unlike a lot of the fastest cars in the category. The Tropos Rallye will cost you $816,000. THE KARTING KING Whether you tried to have a go at professional karting as a child or if you’ve gone to an indoor track for your birthday, we’ve all become accustomed to karting as being the go-to grassroots option to satisfy our driving itch. The Dinka Veto Modern is a go-kart that more closely resemble the arrive-and-drive karts you would rent at a kart track with a dodgem-style bumper that fully encircles the chassis. There is also a Veto Classic, which look like the very basic karts that the likes of Ayrton Senna started out competing in. So far, these two versions of the Veto are the only karts in the game, but it’s not entirely impossible that more can be added. If you want a Veto now though, the Classic will cost you $895,000 and the Modern an extra $100,000, so they are very much working with the costs of an FIA karting season these days. INSPIRATION FROM 1980S F1 Now we come to the first Open Wheel car. The Ocelot R88 is an early 80s style F1 car, and with Ocelot being the brand that represents cars from both Jaguar and Lotus, it’s safe to say that it’s a Lotus F1 car – namely the 1985 97T in which Ayrton Senna won his first of 41 Grand Prix. With a different livery, you could make it look like many other cars from that period. This includes the 1983 Renault RE40, the 1982 Brabham BT50 and 1984 McLaren MP4/2. The R88 is quite expensive at $3,115,000 but it’s just one of four Open Wheel cars you can currently buy in GTA Online. A TRIBUTE TO ALAIN PROST Another F1 car from the 80s, the Progen PR4 is most certainly based on the McLaren MP4/5 in which Alain Prost won his third of four F1 championships. Progen being the GTA world’s equivalent of McLaren and with Honda’s GTA equivalent Dinka also appearing on the car. But again, with a change of livery, you could also make it look like the 1991 Jordan 191, the 1990 Benetton B190, the 1991 Williams FW14 or the 1990 Ferrari 641. It’s even more expensive than the R88, coming at $3,515,000. THE BUDGET OPEN-WHEELER From two 80s F1 cars to a modern IndyCar, the Declasse DR1 is most certainly based on the Dallara DW12 that has been used in the American IndyCar series since 2012. The Declasse brand is the GTA world’s version of Chevrolet, one of two engine suppliers for IndyCar along with Honda. You can make the DR1 resemble a multitude of cars from the IndyCar series. Such examples being Patricio O’Ward’s McLaren Arrow SP, Will Power’s Penske and Marco Andretti’s 2019 Indy 500 livery. At $2,997,000 , the DR1 is by far the cheapest open wheel car. A NOD TO VETTEL Let’s get to the final open wheeler, the Benefactor BR8. In the GTA world, Benefactor is the equivalent of Mercedes who have been the dominant force in F1 since the hybrid era began in 2014, but the BR8 would appear to be from before then. In fact, it has stronger similarities to one of the cars part of the team that dominated before Mercedes, specifically the Red Bull RB7 that Sebastian Vettel took to the second of his four championships in 2011. You could make it look like a 2019 McLaren MCL34, a 2010 Mercedes W10, a 2012 McLaren MP4-27 or even that iconic camo testing livery by Red Bull before the 2015 season. It is indisputably the fastest of all the open wheel cars and will set you back $3,400,000.

Rockstar North’s GTA Online has been a juggernaut in the gaming world, lasting three generations of gaming consoles. It debuted on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, then on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One a year later and will launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 11 November later this year. There are many reasons this game has stood the test of time, one of them being the vast array of vehicles you can purchase in-game.

In GTA, the brands are all fictional. For example, if you wanted a Ferrari, you would have to look for the in-game brand Grotti. Instead of Lamborghini and Porsche, you have Pegassi and Pfister respectively. The car and racing communities in GTA are still going strong nearly eight years after the game’s initial release and as a result, Rockstar likes to cater to every motoring subculture, whether that be lowriders, bikers or street racers. Motorsport fans are no exception.
