6 racing games that deserve a sequel

BURNOUT (2001-2018) Even though Burnout Paradise was recently remastered for Nintendo Switch, it has somewhat drifted away from what made the series popular. We miss the adrenaline-fueled battles of Burnout 3: Takedown or Burnout: Revenge. Accomplishing challenges and racing while taking opponents down in many creative ways was simply satisfying. Collecting trophies for finding new ways to demolish other cars was a unique art of hunting with cars back then. When our vision blurred stronger than in any other racing game, we truly felt the force of speed and controllers quickly became sweaty. It is time to bring that feeling back. It is time for a new Burnout which goes back to its roots. BLUR (2010) We have already told you about Blur in a seperate article. The "realistic Mario Kart" with licensed cars is one of the world's most underestimated fun racers out there. With a new hype around racing games, especially esports racing, its time might have come. A new Blur could appeal to a brand-new set of players and benefit from the latest push in popularity the genre has gained. If it's done well, it could also reach out to a new audience with a broadcasted esports competition, giving fans of real racing a different experience from ones they are used to. SPLIT SECOND VELOCITY (2010) You can't hear Blur without adding Split/Second: Velocity. Both games appeared around the same time and despite being quite different, stole sales from one another. Split/Second is a unique fun racer, which lets you fill a gauge with risky driving and spectacular drifting. Once the gauge is half-filled or complete, you can let accidents happen in your surrounding area. Those can stop your rivals, but be careful not to crash as well. The idea was very interesting ten years ago, and makes you wonder what developers could do to it with today's computing power. So we definitely need a sequel. MOTORSTORM (2006-2012) The MotorStorm series has undergone some changes since the PS3 starting title surprised the world with its stunning graphics in 2006. Its core has remained the same though. Relentless off-road action with different types of cars, quads and bikes sharing the track. Using the vehicles' unique traits to your own advantage was the key. The series has featured various terrains, such as desert (first game), jungle and coast (Pacific Rift), arctic (Arctic Edge) and destroyed cities (Apocalypse). The latest iteration "MotorStorm RC" became a topdown remote-car game. Once the dust has settled after the release of DIRT 5, Evolution Studios should use the hype and give us another edition (original gameplay this time, please) of this prestigious off-road series. WAVERACE (1992-2001) Who said that racing games always have to contain cars? WaveRace was a very popular series that started on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), progressed to the N64 and found its (current) end on Nintendo's GameCube with WaveRace Blue Storm. Using waves and other traits of the liquid tracks to your own advantage (high jumps or shortcuts) was a pleasure for anyone who loved both water and motorsports. Many hidden features like the ability to ride dolphins or whales made the series even more exciting. As you can see on the picture, even Blue Storm has aged quite badly. It's time for a new WaveRace game with stunning graphics. MARIO KART (1992-2017) Some might say: "Mario Kart for Nintendo Switch is only 3 years old!". Nevertheless, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe doesn't contain too much that wasn't already in the original game on Wii U. So, basically, Mario Kart 8 is already six years old. Mario Kart Tour was not necessarily a disappointment, but it came far from delivering what fans were used to get from the series. Despite Mario Kart Home Circuit being a very interesting announcement, expectations should be lowered. The concept still has to prove how fertile it really is. Not everybody has a home suitable for hosting interesting tracks, based on reality. So please, Nintendo, bring us a beautiful Christmas gift and announce a brand-new Mario Kart!
