A Formula 1 game with three brand-new tracks, what is possibly the best open world racer of all time in Forza Horizon 5, and tons of incredible updates for classics like iRacing and Assetto Corsa Competizione: The year of 2021 was a banger for fans of racing games.

But what lies ahead of us? From the return of legendary franchises to a possible revolution in the F1 game series: we have a look at the hottest racing games set to be released in 2022 and beyond!

2022 – the best year for racing game fans?

Since the release of the PlayStation 5, fans have eagerly waited for a next-gen Gran Turismo. The fact that the last edition of the game, GT Sport, was released five years ago only fueled the hype. In March 2022, the wait will finally come to an end. We’re excited to see whether Gran Turismo 7 will live up to the high expectations. On the other side of the console market, Xbox owners have been patiently waiting for the eighth installment of Forza Motorsport. Little is known about the game so far. But with GT 7 finally hitting the market, we expect Microsoft to drop some more info about its competitor soon.

But Forza and Gran Turismo are not the only well-known franchises due to celebrate their returns. It was all the way back in 2012 when the last Test Drive game was released. The prestigious franchise is all about the lifestyle experience. In Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown players will be able to drive classy cars from manufacturers like Ferrari, Bugatti and Lamborghini and race them on a 1:1 scale rendition of Hong Kong Island.

A new year also always means a new Formula 1 game. While the games mostly only differ in driver lineups and some smaller changes, this year the franchise could undergo a bigger shift. In 2021, the developing studio Codemasters was acquired by Electronic Arts. The publisher did not have much of an influence on F1 2021, which was almost fully developed at that date. But for F1 2022, things might look rather different. With Formula 1 itself changing significantly in 2022, fans will hope that this could apply to the game as well. A switch to EA’s in-house Frostbite engine could make the game look even more realistic. We are hoping to hear more from Codemasters soon.

But these games are just the tip of the iceberg! Watch our video to know everything about the upcoming racing games in 2022 and beyond.
