I've been playing with this wang tile generator, http://robburke.net/mle/wang/, seems to do a reasonable job quickly with a reasonable amount of control.
If anyone wants to try it, I'll save you the trouble of working out the Wang Tile Colours (NESW) for 16 tiles. copy/paste lines below:
