Waiting for server problem

Deleted and re-installed brand new clean version of GSCE (no mods) through Steam.
But having some multiplayer issues.
Managed to get into a hosted session through MPportal but can't get out of pit garage message in left corner says: "Waiting for server"
Eventually managed to do half a dozen laps then went in to tweak setup and then I could not get back out on track...
I quit server and also the game and rejoined but the "Waiting for server" message never went away
Ping is fine, firewall off...
Is there a patch or something I have not installed?
Any ideas?

Is that just on one server (then i'd blame it on the host having issues) or does this happen on all servers?

@xnorb It happened on one server - but honestly have not tried on others so will check out joining others and report back
