EA and Codemasters celebrate the USGP this weekend with free access to their F1 22 title. The game will be freely available from tomorrow until 24th October, covering the whole Grand Prix weekend. You can access special price and promotions during that time as well.

F1 arrives at Austin this weekend and gamers will have a chance to play freely on the following platforms until 24th October; Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Steam (PC). Not only this free access will be enabled, also a Daniel Ricciardo Challenge will be running as well.

In the challenge you try to beat the McLaren's driver lap time on Circuit of the Americas track and upload your fastest laptime to social networks with hashtags #RicciardoChallenge and #F122gameSweepstakes. A random winner will be selected and have the chance to virtually meet with Daniel himself.

“With the Circuit of the Americas just around the corner, we wanted to do something special and allow as many players as possible to experience the new era of Formula 1,” said Paul Jeal, Senior Director F1® Franchise at Codemasters. “During this free weekend trial, anyone can experience the thrill of Formula 1 for a limited time and we couldn’t have asked for a better coach to show us around the circuit than Daniel Ricciardo.”

Also remember some free items were included in the last update to celebrate the USGP like special livery, helmet, race suit, gloves and The Griddy celebration that you can claim until 7th November.

I'm glad that I didn't buy this trash. It's the worst experience I had in VR because it simply doesn't work properly, not even with a 4090 12700K.

The tracking is simply bugged and this issue is unsolved: https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues/F1-22-VR-Stutters-with-head-movement/td-p/11593614

47 pages and EA/CodeMasters still don't give a f***

Not sure what's going on at EA/Codemaster, why they don't fix this(maybe they can't? they don't have the knowledge?). They should remove all VR support advertisements since it simply doesn't work properly. I got full 90hz/fps LOCKED and it still jitters in every corner with head movement and that with the best hardware available(and all other titles run flawlessly in VR).

Also the menu's are a complete disaster and the car handling/physics/ffb is not on the level of any proper sim, not even close! (AMS2/AC/ACC/RF2/DR2)

It's a shame that EA owns the F1 license, a proper developer should have it (Kunos/Reiza for example), the same for WRC, it's wasted. I expect the worst now.

Installed and now uninstalled.

10 trillion micro-shudders in VR, hard to navigate through the menu's, and once I got on track it was like stepping back 10 years.

But what really killed it, having to wait at every step so it can "communicate with server" I tried to run steam in offline mode to get around this crap and the game wouldn't even launch.

So....I should have stuck to my initial stance, I regret having their shitty data on my sacred PC.

Now I can go back to the F1 car in AMS2 which blows my tiny freakin mind every time I fire it up.

Well this has been the most disappointing F1 first run experience I have had... I may give it a go tomorrow especially if it can find my EA account...

First off I spent 3 hours trying to get it to connect to my EA account, went through all the different launchers and possible accounts... Nothing... After 3 hours of no fun I thought screw it time to just get into the game... Next issue, the game wasn't recognising my pedals, wheel or any controller except the keyboard... Thought ok, let's get passed that and see if it's just a bug with my set up that can be worked out by setting a manual control profile... Nope, had to exit the game...

Which by this point was getting tedious as the exit the game button crashed the game every time, to the point that ctrl-alt-delete was the only was to get the game to exit without turning the rig off... Mind you if I had hit exit from force of habit the game is stuck on top so I can't get to task manager or alt-tab anywhere...

Then after I remove all my extra peripherals I can set up the controls, but I can't even use my H-pattern now... Set up a race at Spa, get rid of all the aids and annoying bits... Thought my rig could handle decent specs that the game would default to... Nope slideshow on the grid before I even started... Got that stable, then I had to drop a lot of stuff to medium or high to get off the line... Those are settings that BETA games require for me... But ok time to drive the car... And it just wasn't fun...

Something felt vaslty different to my last running in an F1 title... The FFB seemed very light and the set up screen was as bare minimum as ever... But my first 5 hours was far too much frustration and not enough on track fun... Once there I felt underwelmed by the driving...

And unless they are hidden behind the EA Play wall of disconnection there's no historic content at all... Instead I get street legal cars? really? They actually spent time so I can make believe the drivers get to take their road cars out on the track and race them?... Then oh great I can decorate the background to the menu screens and have a T-shirt??... They actually spent time on this? There better be tonne of layers to that customisation within the MyTeam mode to make any of these options pay off for me...

I'm going to give it another shot as I have had fun from what Codemasters has offered in the past but this has been a really dissappointing start...

Glad I got to try it for free I suppose...

tried it... in VR... lame...
physics feel ok... but the graphics are nothing compared to other sims...
looks bad on my system (i7 6700 GTX 1080 Rift CV1) - almost undriveable... colors washed out... bad performance... even on lowest settings... deleted after some rounds on Cota, Algarve and Spa... thank you for this enlighting experience that this is nothing for me...
regards...

Just think, this nonsense is where the WRC franchise will be headed when Codies takes over.
Hopefully we will at least be able to buy a sweet condo in all of the Rally locations :p

First thank you to Codemaster to add VR to the 2022 edition, better late than never, also thank you for allowing us to try the game for free.
After spending the day qualifying and racing at COTA, I can say that this edition, because of VR, is much more interesting to me and makes it tempting to take advantage of the 50% discount.
Is VR bad?Yes, not good enough for this CV1/1080 TI user. Good enough and better than no VR, maybe, so thank you for giving us the option.
As for the game, it is more or less the same as previous edition, not great, but it works. No other game go deeper into what a F1 week end is about, The AI, the tracks, the cars, the F1 driver, it all works.
I am glad I did not buy it at full price, as it is just a rehash of previous editions, but at 50%, just for VR, makes it tempting, but it is too blurry to make it truly interesting.
Here is to hoping, next year will bring great VR and better physics.
Other developers can do it, so surely, Codemaster, with all they have available to them, can do at least as well, not even hoping for better.

I get that micro transactions are annoying, but is it something that you are required to do in 2022? From what I gather, the game works just fine for F1 races, career, etc.

I for one will take advantage and try, instead of bitching about nonsense in the comments section
Problem is the game is full of other problems like dunno.... THE F*****G MOUSE DOESN'T WORK in the main menu, I don't know if I'm supposed to do something to turn it on but honestly the simple fact that (if possible) I have to look for that "feature" is absurd.
Apart from that, microtransactions and pointless stuff clutter the interface and are annoying to see everywhere.
I've played for about 1 hour and I can tell you that the driving model is trash (ie the car sometimes just spins suddenly in 3rd gear if you give full gas on a straight, no chance to catch it mid sbinn) while the supercars handle like oil tankers.

Ok….

hmmmm I think it's alright so far. Defo not easy for me at 51 and my decaying body! Farted about in the Aston Vantage at Monaco, then realised I have loads of tracks I've never raced, so went to Baku in the Haas.....realised why I hate modern F1 cars in my other sims....too many farking gears...my brain is hard coded to whack the gear shift 4 times to go from top to 2nd!! LOL. Won't buy it though, maybe for a fiver in a couple of years to get more achievements.

Been burned too many times by Codies to try this, even for free...and the refresh rate nonsense seals the deal. The W12 in iRacing scratches that itch for me just fine...and if that ever bores me (hasn't in months), there's still many amazing F1 cars in AMS1, AMS2 and AC.

when i was growing up in my teenage years during the 1990s i adored open wheeler games, played the hell out of Microprose Grand Prix 1 and 2 and Indycar Racing 1 and 2, but eventually at some point i lost interest and got more into GT racing.
these F1 cars feel like cheat codes to drive and so so many gears, like i enjoy squeezing everything out of the gear but when it goes so fast up you basically don't get that enjoyment, and the grip is of course insane, but at the cost that i don't feel the car anymore, the body roll etc. yeah, it's simply not my genre anymore, the cars are too good from a mechanical point of view.
i do still enjoy driving the 1998 Indycars in Automobilista 2.

Thank you! With my dead slow internet connection (less than 1 GB per hour download speed) I wouldn't have been able to try the game this weekend if it wasn't for your timely article.
This being said, I tried the game today expecting to struggle with the handling, or something similar. However, the very first impression to strike me, and the one which instantly ruined the game for me, was the quality of the circuits. Compared to laserscanned circuits, they look like they were drawn from memory.
That's just not good enough today.

"Player One" still!?! so sad...
Solo>Grand Prix>own team and no female team mate - just too many dicks on the Grid.
