Revisiting a Classic: Pikes Peak Hill Climb in DiRT Rally

Pikes Peak in DiRT Rally 00.jpg
The Pikes Peak Hill Climb in the first DiRT Rally is one of the rare times the legendary course has appeared in a racing sim, and it was awesome.

There are certain legendary cars and tracks that are surprisingly hard to find in racing sims. The McLaren F1, 90's CART, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway to name a few. Mods can often save the day, but as official content some of the most well-loved vehicles and locations can be tough to own. Pikes Peak certainly belongs in that group.

Pikes Peak Hill Climb is the legendary ascent in Colorado dating back over 100 years that has challenged drivers to a 20 kilometer sprint to set the fastest time point-to-point while ascending over 1,400 meters. The course has been a mix of paved and gravel sections for most of its history, but since 2011 the entire course has been paved, which is the version included in DiRT Rally.

While it could be argued that, broadly speaking, DiRT Rally 2.0 does everything better than its predecessor, only the first DiRT Rally includes Pikes Peak.

The ascent undertaken with Pikes Peak is so great that the landscape undertakes a total transformation between the start and the finish. You begin the climb in the middle of a green, densely treed forest. The end of the course lands you in an environment more akin to Mars than the beautiful forest you left less than 15 minutes prior.

But admiring the impressive landscapes will be the last thing on your mind when taking on this course. The rapid ascent makes for many blind sections, including countless corner entries. Those undulations also hold the potential to upset the car's balance.

Aside from the elevation changes, the course itself can best be summarized as winding, and relative to the average speed it feels narrow. Another reason drivers get the feeling of being on a narrow course is the near constant threat of the vehicle falling off a cliff if the track limits aren't respected.

It's a very challenging, very rewarding experience to drive Pikes Peak, and thankfully we have it in DiRT Rally. If you've moved on to DR2.0, or are seeking a new challenge in sim racing, it might be worth buying or reinstalling the first DiRT Rally to take on Pikes Peak Hill Climb. An excellent, and unfortunately rare, experience in the world of sim racing.

I've spent many days of my life at the Pikes Peak hill climb and I gotta say that Codies did a good job of nailing a lot of the details. Even the porta-shitter just above the Sump/Ski Area. Good stuff :p
But the tarmac physics in the game make it not worth the bother, and the fact that you can only drive those horrendous Group B cars on the course is the nail in the coffin.

The best iteration I've seen to date is the most recent version for AC. Downsides being it's only the tarmac version, and it's in AC. :)

SLREvo and RBR is where I go to get my Pikes Peak fix when I need it. I took a stab at converting it to rF2, but those of you who have tried it know how that worked out :p
Which mod for AC are you referring to? The ktulu77 one, here on RD?

I recently tried to run DR1 again before moving to DR2, but my multiple controllers were a nightmare to setup (if it was even possible) so I moved on....I did really enjoy DR1 back in the day though...

RaceRoom includes a Hillclimb.... Free too I think? I need to give this one more time in the seat...

I really like that dirt rally has it (dont know why they removed it in 2), and who doesn't love climbing in the Audi :), but my personal favorite Pikes peak iteration is for BeamNG (think its on the beam mod forum). Adds a little extra flair when you're shooting for a quick time and you're one move away from destruction

Main reason I picked up the game a while back on sale. Legendary track that is like you said very hard to find. Would prefer a version with gravel though. The one in RBR is super good as well.

I wish Polyphony didn't sign an exclusive licence to the rights for Pikes Peak. It baffles me since they still haven't implemented it into their game. Will be exciting to see Pikes Peak in Gran Turismo but they seriously didn't need to sign an exclusive deal to it.
My understanding is that the road itself is maintained by the city of Colorado Springs, which makes it a public road. It's in National Forest.
I don't see how Polyphony can own anything besides the name of the race on the road. PPIHC.
I would think that any dev could model the road, move the starting line a few meters either direction and call it something other than PPIHC?
I could be completely off-base here.

Not too sure how it works but I know that Codemasters wanted to use Pikes Peak again in their newer games but said that they couldn't due to Polyphony signing exclusive rights to it. Licence is a pain to understand.

They might have an exclusive license to the official laser scan data. Presumably, someone could go and scan the course themselves and not call it Pikes Peak, but it's not worth the cost to publishers to do so. I don't think sim devs these days are very interested in hand-crafting massive 3D track models with no scan data.

Does photogrammetry scan the surface in the same way/as accurately that a laser scan does?

No, although it's not like laserscans aren't incredibly noisy anyway and don't need manual smoothing.

That stuff about 1mm^2 resolution and whatever might be true but I've never seen any track mesh that didn't end up as being a few cm^2 at least. If you've ever looked at raw scan data vs what is suitable to output into a sim then you'll know what I mean.

I think some manufacturers do input in raw scan data but it must be a lot less noisy (?) and their sims run at like 5khz anyway so it's not pointless. Kind of pointless for a consumer sim running at some hundreds of hz so if the photogammetry is done well then IMO it might be just about as usable as an average laser scan. Track builders can correct me. :p

Not sure if it's been pointed out yet but the DR1.0 had the dirt version of Pikes Peak too, not just the asphalt one. Also, it had 80s Pikes Peak cars.

One of the reason I still have Dirt Rally on my PC. I love a white knuckle run up the Peak. I still fire up Dirt on the PS3 on occasion to hoon the Kenworth up there......

I reinstalled Dirt Rally with VR mod and I rediscovered an incredible passion. Also I can put almost everything graphics to maximum. In VR it's a show. The ascent of Pikes Peak is fascinating and even if the FF is not perfect on asphalt, still good driving sensations and once given by you can master more than 800 horses, there is a beautiful simulation. Excellent game and above all in incredible VR.
