964 Downshifting (H-Shifter). 5-4-N?

Bought the Porsche 964 and had go at Road America.

H-Shifter slider on, manual+autoclutch in settings.

Downshifting, careful not to over rev, don't want to bend the valves on this expensive flat six.

Fifth, Fourth, OK, but engaging 3rd shows N and I have to shift 2 or 3 times into 3rd.

R3E experts: What am I doing wrong?

It's been a long time since I used my H-box and I know R3E has had tweaks to the system since then. Could it be because you are miss-shifting, or trying to go down too early?

Probably this. The gearing on the 964 is a little 'weird' compared to modern gear-boxes. There's a graph somewhere on the S3 forums which Alex Hodgkinson posted showing the gearing, and there aren't exactly massive overlaps in the gears.

I had the same problem, posted over at the Sector 3 forums and this was Hodgkinson's reply. My current rule of thumb with downshifting and manually blipping the 964 is to wait until the RPMs drop to around 5500 then the next lower gear engages properly. Knowing this makes me focus that much harder, then on occasion when my mind drifts I'll donwshift too soon and pay the price, haha.
