It seems synthesizing engine sounds is an extremely difficult task given that it's 2020 and sim engines generally still sound like vacuum cleaners.
Why not look into machine learning and generating engine audio from AI?
Here's an article talking about just this and the success AI has already had:
I suspect AI could, given a bit of work, easily generate sound accurate synthesized samples from real life samples.
AI can already generate music, video, screenplays, voices, etc.
The hard work would be collecting and tagging and collating the data set for the learning process.
Once you have a machine learning expert I bet you could apply ai generation to a number of other areas. Opponent AI? Other sound effects? I mean whatever you have a dataset for you could apply machine learning.
