Anybody collect / build 1:18th scale diecast (or other) model cars?

Most car guys are really little boys at heart ... always pushing little cars around. I already covered HO slot cars in another thread (HERE). I don't remember bringing up other model cars however.

I started building plastic scale model cars back in 1962 or 63. I built any scale but was drawn to 1/25 due to its detail. I fooled around with plastic kits off and on for a number of years, but never like when I was a kid, until about 20 years ago when I discovered 1/18 diecast. Initially all that was available here in the US were the Bburago and Solito, which were ... ok ... but just. Then Ertl and Joeuf models started coming out ... and I started paying more attention. Then I noticed Revell of Germany ... and I started buying!!!

Initially I just wanted to buy the cars on my "ten best looking cars ever made" list. But I thought almost ALL of them looked GREAT ... so my collection got over 200 pretty fast. Since that time I culled out the more common of them and have become more selective in my purchases. I don't have a particular theme as such, but see that I naturally lean towards 2 place sports cars & coupes and seem to prefer GT fastbacks over open roadsters.

Unfortunately, because they gather dust like MAD, I only have closed cabinet display storage for about 100 ... the rest of my collection is packed away in boxes.

Well, it turns out that I can't simply collect them ... there are so many cars I NEED!!!, but are not commercially built. The 1957 Chevy Stock car (Glen "Fireball Roberts" drove Chevys before switching to Pontiac) seen in the photo above arrived today. I needed this car not only because I don't have anything from NASCAR ... but I also needed the steel wheels to turn one of the early 'Vettes in the back ground of the lead photo into Briggs Cunningham's Vette that won it's class at Le Mans. I'll have to have the wheels and tires cast for me because plain steel wheels are impossible to find. The other red Vette will become a model of the first Vette racer. I've already found the wheels for that one.

But I can't do all that without building a model of my old MG racer. I already had the roadster and GT in the back ground so I bought an extra MGB roadster and started hacking, sanding and painting. I started this project some time ago and do a little as the mood hits me.:

Cars MGBs.jpg

Add in some polystyrene rod and I get a roll cage, some scrap aluminum and plastic gets me a racing seat ...

Cars MGB rollbar.jpg

... and then a little work on the lathe and I have a set of 2" SU's with velocity stacks. The engine paint is the real deal MGB (BMC) from back in the day. I have 8 cans of the stuff. The finned valve cover is all aluminum. I still have to come up with the correct mini lite wheels for the car. Until somebody makes a DECENT set, I've started making my own, but it's really difficult to get the spokes correct. I never did get a Paddy Hopkirk gas pedal in the real car, but I think I just might fab one up for old time's sake.

If there is any interest at all, I might dig out what I think are the 10 best looking diecast cars and put them on this thread.

I know that might be to much RL for some here ... but do any of y'all collect 1:18th scale diecast cars ... or ANY models at all? Why don't you share them here!

Nice, I collect 1:18 die cast models of noteworthy cars I have driven (Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s, etc). It’s a cool reminder of awesome times when I look at them. Most models are by BBR, Autoart, Kyosho and some others

Awesome collection and perfect setup with the cabinet. I built a couple of models when I was a kid with Dad. Also had a small collection of diecast models (mostly Ferraris') but as I got older I sort of lost interest.
I would still love to collect diecast models. A collection of race cars and or Ferrari.

In between everything else I build mostly 1:43rd and 1:24th with a few 1:12th thrown in as necessary. Tameo Kits of Italy produce the very best F1 cars in any scale, a sweeping statement but when you have a 1:43rd Ferrari 312T with more detail than a 1:12th Tamiya styrene offering it's 'interesting'. I'll admit to owning a few 1:18th diecasts, simply because the subjects were Australian and driven by two of my all time favourite drivers. I did do quite a bit of rebuilding just the same.
Nice to see you rebuild them yourself, it must be more satisfying than unboxing something just to park on a shelf!
And I can think of several aftermarket sets of Minilites but nothing in 1:18th.
Building for 'clients' tends to take up personal modelling time but it makes $$$ which goes into engineering equipment, in turn I use my lathes and milling machines for scratch builds, another satisfying (and profitable!) area of modelling.........................if at times stressful!

Here's a couple of shots of a couple of my old efforts, one kit build and one scratched up.

Carrera 1:32 scale models have also a good looking on our boards and shelfs in the living-room. It's plastic I know but affordable and useable for slot-racing.

I build only 1:24 but mostly rare cars. I have some for sale too (no time to build and place for ) and sometimes trucks too. I have EB110S, XJ220, 244 Turbo, '95 Mustang Shelby Cobra, '94 M-B C AMG DTM Tabac Team, Porsche 911 Carrera (993), '53 Ford Victoria, '98 Subaru Imprza WRC (Rally France)...and, and, and...Most of stays in my mom house. I love to build mostly cars but sometimes other models too if they are interesting for me.

I kinda collect some 1:18 model cars (have 14).. but exclusively race cars and most of them are GT3 cars. but also have some LMP cars and JGTC

Back in the day a company named Pyro offered a line of cars from the 20's, 30's and 40's in 1/32. GREAT cars, but most if not all were kerbside models with no motors as I recall. Back in the day they were very in expensive and popular converts to slot racing. Now I see they can be found on Ebay upwards of $45 per each.

Did you turn your own spindles & hubs and wire your own wheels? Nice work! I want to give that a try one day.

Great job on the Renault!

Amazing scratch building modelers down in Australia. I've seen some of their work in 1/25 and it mind blowing. Australia looks like my kind of place ... no "can't" in the vocabulary and no quit in the people. The US used to be that way ... not so much anymore.

I'm putting the parts together to scratch build a couple Formula Vee's, and maybe a Lowcost Seven (Lotus Seven clone) in 1/18th scale. The hardest thing is creating cylinders with fins on them for the VW engines.

I have few 1:25 cars waiting to be build, when I was young I build 1:72 tanks, planes and helis. Plan return to my long lost hobby but so far I just collected a lot of boxes, games are far more entertaining at the moment and the lack of time don't help the situation ;)
Would love to see some more pictures of that huge collection.

Nice stuff there! That would be Timmy Slade's commodore. I gotta get me some of them Australian V8 super cars! I need some GT3's as well ... and a Ford GTE ... maybe ALL the GTLM cars.

Crap ... this is the way I got to over 200 before!

My wife is gonna kill me.

@ Serge.M < I don't have a lot of models of cars that I've driven ... I was a mechanic for over 40 years ... but I DO have a model of my first car. A PV 544 Volvo. Mine was a 1960 ... and it was beige with a blue gut, not very dark blue like this one ... just a paint job away!

Yep I was at the Bathurst 1000 in 2014 and when I heard they were releasing this limited edition car I had to have one, got it sent to my hotel in Coffs Harbour about a week after the race and it flew back to the UK with me, here's a better pic

I like my AUTOart models most. Minichamps is also very very good and not very expensive. Spark is too expensive for the quality and my taste. (I'm not THAT fan of resin models...and the windshield of the Aston Vantage is like just a foil lol) I stay away from Norev models, they're made kinda too clumsy for my taste. I've seen the SAP #4 AMG GT3 from Norev and the endurance lights were just stickers but it was still 99€
