F1 22 Are high gear on slow corners faster?

By watching youtubers play F1 22 I could see they almost never go lower than 3rd gear, even on super slow corners like monaco hairpin.

Has this game always been like this? Is it some sort of bug? It makes no sense to me that a high gear should be used to accelerate out of slow corners.

It's to avoid excessive wheel spin. It's the same IRL. Here's some telemetry from the qualifying in Monaco - neither Verstappen or Russel goes lower than third gear.
