Black screen exiting track

If I'm on track and press escape then exit to monitor the screen will go all black. I can bring the screen back by clicking where the X would be to exit to main menu. Any ideas tips appreciated.

I deleted (you can just rename) d3d9.dll in the SCE folder, that should fix it (did for me) BUT you will lose the track map. I didn't care as I never use a track map.
