Can somebody explain how the AI works in AC?

I've been getting ready for a race and found myself wondering how the AI work.

What line do they follow? It it a form of "the perfect line" through a corner?

Is there more than one line? If so, how are these lines determined?

It seems sometime that the AI deviate from the assigned line to get offensive or defensive. How is this plotted?

Can the AI change the line they are assigned?

There are 3 lines, racing line and left/right track limits, depending on how much space there is between another car and the track limits they'll use it to pass.
