Content Manager - what the hell did I do wrong?

So, I decided to give Content Manager and the shaders patch a go today - and that's 4 hours of my life I'll never get back

It totally borked my AC install. First off every car I tried had a bright incandescent purple steering wheel, and then I noticed that AC would not in any way work with my wheel (a G29 if that's important), even from the native launcher. Every other sim had no problems with the wheel. Even after numerous restarts AC would not see my wheel, and nor would clearing the AC folder from my documents achieve anything

Anyway a long story short I needed to get rid of content manager and the shaders patch, completely delete AC from my steam library, and then redownload AC.

So what could I have done wrong given that so many of you are using CM and the shaders patch without issue?

Best thing to do is do a search for content manager install and youll find a walk thru on u tube that shows you how to install it.Once you do youll love it.Makes AC a new game.Good luck with it!
