After a long wait, Codemasters have released the new update for DiRT Rally today, containing two new cars, 12 stages in Finland and lots of new and enhanced features.

Not too far off a full release, DiRT Rally has been updated to v0.8, with the 2001 Subaru Impreza WRC, and 2001 Ford Focus WRC included, the cars represents the two most recent British world champions, from a year they both fought hard for the world title.

The new stuff includes
  • A new, reworked handling model is also included for the 60's, 70's, 80's RWD and 2010-classes, with a major engine and downforce re-work, to make the cars more dynamic.
  • Custom Championships, to tweak the number of stages, AI difficulty and number of events, to set up a championship that suits you and the time you have to play
  • New engine sound for the 1995 Subaru Impreza
  • Mouse Support!
  • Invite Friend option for PvP events.
And here is the changelog!
  • The audio FX levels for the surfaces and kick up have been brought back so that you can hear all that gravely goodness.
  • We sent our Rallycross AI drivers to the opticians so that they can now see when they need to avoid other cars when they are approaching the joker entrance.
  • Now that they can see better they are also setting faster laps.
  • We’ve fixed the camera clipping in certain camera angles when you changed the Field of View.
  • We’ve made some Hyper threading fixes that should now prevent those annoying stuttering issues that some of you were having.
  • We’ve stopped the Engineer contract lengths and costs from being affected when competing in league events.
  • Toggling Push to Talk or enabling/disabling voice communications through the pause menu is now actually working.
  • The Reset Timer has now been increased to 15 seconds when attempting to get back on track. I know we said that before but this time it is actually in.
  • Cars will no longer roll over on the start in PVP races, ROFL.
  • We’ve made sure that the cars are visible on the start line even when collisions are turned off in PVP – they will still ghost during the race though.
  • Your PVP opponents won’t be showboating and driving around with the handbrake on anymore.
  • The gear setup will no longer be changing between stages without a service area.
  • We’ve fixed those odd camera angles that were being used in spectate mode.
  • The miles driven using owned vehicles in PVP now accrue towards unlocking upgrades for that vehicle.
  • When viewing a replay using an interior camera, the speedometers now show the correct speed for all vehicles.
  • We’ve fixed a whole host of other stuff too but they were too boring to call out in this list.

I like the update, it adds a lot more decent content to the game. I don't mind the cars (want more stages), but its a nice addition. Finland was needed, you can't have a rally game without Finland, and at least it isn't fantasy this time (DiRT 3). The fix to the way the cars handles and reacts to surface changes is really neat. Overall Flying Finland is a great update from Codies.

V2 handling feels and looks good on gravel, but on tarmac, something is off. Go drive the Focus and it feels like it is pivoting from a central point, it goes sideways on the straights and so on. Such behaviour was seen in CMR 3, 4, 5...

I can just approve of the new handling. Everything feels more fluid and reactive. I actually enjoyed driving the Subaru 555 around Monaco, which is normally kind of boring.
Of I course I jumped right into a custom event in Finland with the WRX STi and it was a blast even without upgrades. I saved all my money now to do my Masters Championship with this car and I believe that it will be absolutely awesome when I get all upgrades in there eventually :D

First I felt like Walter Röhrl, then like Ari Vatanen, then like ColinMcRae and now like Richard Burns :D AWESOME!

Must admit it feels great now. I did a quick rally in Wales and Finland earlier and I feel the cars handle much better now. The FFB is superb on my T500RS. Really good.
The replay external cameras are a bit better on the Finland stages, but same as usual crap and codemasters arcade style still on the Wales stages. If they did proper external track cameras this rally sim would be perfect for me.

splendid update, destroyed first the ford and then the subaru on two of the long finnish stages, ouch. replays have gotten way better and the new handling feels more reactive to me. now i need to do some serious saving of in-game cash to get my hands on the subaru, or the ford? or the subaru ...

FYI the Group A Subaru hasn't had the updates physics yet.

I couldn't help myself. I had to buy DiRT Rally once I seen it on special at Steam with 15% off at the moment. Looking forward to giving the Escort Mk2 a squirt like Arne mentioned.

This update is definitely a big step in the right direction. Even the tarmac stages make a lot more sense now, and the gravel ones are closing in on perfection.

The mandatory "jump into the car from time to time" feature of replays is getting really old, however. If I want to watch the replay from inside the car, I'll just switch the camera, thank you very much. Not to mention that I just saw the entire goddamn' stage from the cockpit cam... what's the point of making me watch it again from almost the same angle? Oh, and why is the co-pilot audible while outside of the car? Makes the replays even worse...

It's a good thing there's finally some mouse support implemented in Dirt Rally, but it's really weird with no "OK" and "Back" buttons anywhere, you know. If one has to chose an option with the mouse and accept the change with the "Button 18", that just doesn't cut it as a "mouse support".

Cant wait to get home from work to try this evening, so far this game keeps genuinely improving with every update, which is all i could really ask or expect from early access, it seems obvious codemasters are trying hard with this title,
My only gripe so far is finding that point between grip and loosing it on tarmac, it just snaps were the gravel feels natural,
