Ferrari 312/T & Lotus 72d: brake lights?

I've been enjoying these two 70s F1 cars a lot recently. A lot of fun!

Both cars seem to have what looks like a brake light at the back. But this light doesn't light up when they brake.

Does anyone know what this light is?

I'm pretty sure it's light for wet conditions

Let's call them "rain lights" ... they appeared in the Seventies, 1972 to be more precise.
No rain in AC so .... they'll never light up.
