Finishing the track

Finishing my first track

I've made my track, added a pit lane by way of adding an open ended track, tied the two together at both ends as far as levels and edges. When I do the drivetrack it only goes down the pit lane that I added.
What tells the program that it is not the racing surface but a pit lane and how would i set it, please?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

press button "t" for toggle the tracks or select them in the iconmenue "edit/switch active track"

Next question that I havent been able to find the answer to is:

How do I fill in the terrain of the overall track area that is vacant and extend the surrounding area so I am not viewing the end of a cliff?

Ive tried everything and havent been able to do so.
