AC Ford RS vs Alfa GTAM @ Calabogie - Weds 21st Oct 2020

Assetto Corsa Racing Club event
My Rift CV1 would be up for sale hehe. Just didn't put it online yet. I paid 220€ for it in March, used.
Dunno, 150€ plus shipping would be nice to get out of it. 2 sensors, 2 controllers and the head-stand :D

I have absolutely no idea what's a good price for it in the UK at the moment though, just a late night, spontaneous offer :roflmao:
Well I have to say that's rather tempting, despite me kinda wanting to wait until I can afford a decent high-resolution set and the GPU to drive it(!), cos it would be a shame to find that motion sickness kills the whole experience... Will PM you ;)

Same reason I bought it. I wanted to know whether or not I should order a HP reverb v2 when I'll get my 3070/80.
I'm undecided. I don't have to puke from driving in VR but I'm motion sick for the rest of the day whenever I use it for more than 10 minutes.
After visiting everything of my interest in google vr and seeing all the tracks in "Real 3D measurements and stuff", I can sell it again.

Still undecided about getting a higher resolution headset. Driving around in VR is nice but I could never race with it...

I was done up like a kipper "guv", I have in the past been quite competitive in the Alfa compared to the Escort, ( Axel is on another scale )
and enjoyed trying to give the escort a run for its money.
So had no reason to doubt that was the car on the server, did check a few days earlier in the week and it was the 1970 Alfa.:)

turned up to drive a slug of a car, yes a lot less bump steer, but dull.

Apart from Neil turning up and brightening up the first race near the end. saw no one for both races.:(

But anyway, congrats to the podiums, very impressive times for difficult cars, and a special thankyou to john for the organising.
I realise that you put a lot of effort in and it was just one of those things, the above is really all fun, with a hint of ....

Why do you reckon you wouldn't race with it? The motion sickness or something else?
(I have wondered if lag might be a factor in motion sickness for many people, but of course I have zero experience so far with VR...)

PS: can you recall how late you can get away with hitting the drive button? I generally get scared when it gets to 30 seconds left :D

I always put the screen as close as possible, that why I am probably particularly sensitive to pixel density.
Went from 34” 1440p 144hz, I think the FOV was 37 deg to rift S, had very little problem with dizziness, the rift ran at an easy 80 fps, but I just could not live with picture quality.
Now gone 49” 1440p 120hz with a FOV of 42 deg, bit confused about that, but that is what the FOV calculator says. ( github ) :)

The problem when racing would be that I get very motion sick when I'd turn my head.. I can look to the apexes but that's about it.
But I'm probably the most motion sickness sensitive person I know...
The ability of the eyes adapting to everything is way more important I think. When I strapped the rift to my gf and sat her in the car in AC, the immediately took it off after 10 meters of rolling. But she also can't watch me doing donuts in cockpit view on a monitor so.. there you go.

About lag: I don't feel any lag at all! No input lag from my hands to the virtual wheel nor when moving my head. When you shake your head while running in 45 fps ASW mode, you get some slight artefacts but no "lag". It's way less laggy than prerendered frames = 1 on a 60 hz monitor!
I was very impressed!

About hitting the race button: When I came back to my wheel the grey lights were already there! I hit the race button when the first light came on but while clicking it, I was teleported.. So probably when the first light comes on?

Yeah it doesn't look great.. Not sure if the image quality is better on the Rift S vs CV1. LCD vs OLED, a few more pixels though.. But anyway: At least it is fluid with my 1070! But I didn't really buy it to race with it every other day. More like an experiment, to finally get the VR experience :)

I still don't have VR and have no space for triples but I do keep meaning to try some kind of head tracking...
Up till recently I used the RealHeadMotion app which worked very good for me. But it doesn't work anymore as I got confirmed on the AC community. In the shaders patch is also a similar function called NeckFX but I can't get that one to work at all.

My issue with any camera turning is that your eyes can't tell whether you're turning the camera or the car is understeering/oversteering.
With real head motion it's worst, as you only have the ffb or the car placement to tell.
I'd argue one can spot the slip angle (I guess it's slip angle?) becoming "off" a lot quicker and earlier than feeling it in the ffb or spotting the car isn't placed where it should be.

With actual, manual head tracking like track IR it's better but needs quite some training for the eyes and brain for them to get the neck turning into the "grip equation".
I tested it with a phone app and the phone strapped to my headphones.
I found it awesome at first but very weird that you have to turn your head and turn your eyes on the opposite direction.

Getting into vr for the first time on the other hand felt perfectly natural!

I would always suggest to simply use a higher fov when someone wants to see more. Any camera turning makes you slower or unstable in my view...

Thanks to all for joining in last night, really appreciated guys

My apologies for those of you affected by the Alfa problem, I really thought it was fixed:( Managed a 19.1 with the 'bad' (new!) Alfa in practice, so I've no idea what's going on there - 'cept to say, on my pc, it has the same file name as the old one, yet saves setups to the 1970 version, weird:confused:

Axel, fantastic lap times buddy!.... and I hated the 2nd race as you closed me down  Thanks to @Chris Down for the racing in R1, that was fun - I had to have a lie down after that:roflmao:

Some we’re able to post quick times with the Alfa anyway, nothing new there, it just this bungle head need some sort of leg up to get a good race. :)

Just out of interest does anyone want a “ quick shift“ before I try AC main forum. It is pretty **** really, but if someone cannot make up their mind if to buy one or not, may have it’s uses.
Uk only please, I can post it quite worry free and cheap.

Thanks for these Chris, and now I understand why I had a couple of love taps:p - watching my brake lights... I was dabbing the brake to get the front to grip so must have been very unpredictable for you! It was the only way I could get rid of the understeer to get some weight on the front, oversteer wasn't a problem though:laugh:

I'm sorry, I didn't want to confuse you. I only have the alfa_romeo_gtam (without 1970) installed on 23-07-2020 as you can see below. And because I can join the server, it must be the right version.

EDIT: I checked it and I'm using the bottom one indeed. If you both can use the upper one than apparently both versions will work, which is strange, isn't it? And damn, you have more torque :(!

Can you send me a link to the "other" Alfa or zip it and upload somewhere?
I'd like to have a look at it and how to solve this for the future.. Not sure what the AC server calls for when selecting a car and joining a server.
I can't find the "not 1970" version though...

Rasmus, I'm not sure what you ask me for. The only Alfa I have is the one you can download from the link in John's announcement from this event.
John and Ernie have/had two versions of the Alfa.

It's a bit strange not watching your videos in VR. I don't know what camera angle that you were using, but the absence of the wheel & mirrors seemed, from a spectators perspective, to detract from the close quarter battles. My nit-picking aside, thanks for the videos - I loved John's senior moment mid-way through the first race :p  .

@Chris Down and @GEO147 don't need your choice guys, there's plenty to choose from :p See you later:thumbsup:
John sincere apologies. I had to travel for work yesterday unexpectedly and didn't make it home in time. I did pull over at one point to message to this effect but had no phone signal.

Apologies this is 2nd time this has happened on a Wednesday. We are in a 2nd national lockdown over here in Ireland, and the police have checkpoints on al major roads causing massive delays.

Sorry guys.
