GT race cars equality

OK, I usually race online in this game, pretty much that means on public servers and GT based race with various cars available.

I have noticed a difference in speed between some cars in the class but am wondering if I am missing something else?

I think a few of the cars are fairly close, it seems the Corvette, 458 and 911 are a little quicker than everything else. Then a fairly close gaggle of M3, Z4, Lambo, R8. All feel different obviously and suit some more than others, but the first three are what the really quick alien types use to set silly lap times

But my query is about the McLaren, not the 650, but the basic version. It does seem to be a slower car overall, even if you adjust the hell out it, it always pulls less speed on the straights, even with hardly any wing. I love driving it as it handles beautifully, steers well has great traction etc. But is dog slow.

Am I missing a boost function or something? I remember when I first started playing AC I was in a server and someone mentioned a turn up the boost function? Or hot key. Do most cars start on a lower boost setting? I mention this as this is the only car in the class that is turbocharged is it not?
 
the Ferrari 458 GT2 ,BMW M3 and Corvette C7 are faster than the other cars because they aren't GT3s
I still don't understand why people race race GT2s and GTEs against GT3s
Some cars you can change the Turbo Boost in either the setup screen or with the numberkeys 1-0
1 being 10% Boost and 0 100% Boost
 
GT3 cars don't have adjustable boost.

I've been working on a personal leaderboard of times at Okayama and the other night it was time for the GT cars. Even on this small track I am several seconds slower than the aliens, and the only setup changes I made consisted of using soft tires with pressures adjusted (usually only a couple psi added all the way around), 15 liters of fuel, traction control off, and final gear ratio lowered to whatever value made the top speed in the 180ish range (only had to do this on two or three cars that had default set to 200+)
Of course the cars can each be made quicker with full setups (that I am clueless about) but I simply wanted a baseline to see how much difference the speeds are. (again, in my not so capable hands)

Where do you see what percentage boost is?

And is default 100%?

Press the number keys along the top of the keyboard, you'll see an alert on-screen telling you what it has changed to. I think the default can vary from car to car, for example in the Porsche 917/30 if you set the boost to 100% your engine will blow after a couple laps because that's only meant for qualifying, thus the default boost level is lower than 100% (I believe). Not sure if you can adjust boost in any of the GT2/GTE cars though, you can't in the GT3s.

The setup with certain cars make a huge difference because some default setups are really bad imo. For example on the same track(okayama) my times with Z4 GT3 were in the Default: 1.32.3ish and with my own setup my PB is 1.29.985

Don't think the default setup in the McLaren is that bad, I don't know enough about them to really start messing about too much with damping etc, but my question would be, why on earth did they make the MP4/12 so damn slow!! I think even with a decent setup it would be!!

It's an older, slower car that doesn't race with the newer ones.

Here's the part relevant to GT3 etc.

The first number is how many seconds slower a car is than the previous one in the list. The second number is the number of laps done by that car in the pool of data.
