Hamilton Is Still 'Concerned' With Pirelli

Lewis Hamilton has welcomed Pirelli’s swift reaction to the sport’s tyre troubles but says only Sunday’s German Grand Prix will prove whether the problem has been solved.

The Mercedes ace was one of four drivers who suffered spectacular and potentially dangerous left-rear blow-outs during last weekend’s British Grand Prix, a problem Pirelli have traced to the steel belts used inside the tyres.

Formula One’s sole tyre supplier will use kevlar belts at the Nurburgring this weekend with a new tyre – fusing the structure, construction and belt from last year with the current compounds – in use from Hungary onwards.

Asked for his reaction, Hamilton said: ‘I am satisfied but only when we get there (Germany) will we have a better idea how it is for us.

‘Everyone is in the same boat but I’m glad action has been taken. It’s still a concern. We’ll see how the weekend goes but I’m sure they’ve taken the right steps to make it safe.’

Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg, the victor at Silverstone, said: ‘I’m confident the right decisions will be taken because safety is a very important factor. We don’t have experience on these tyres. We ran them in Montreal, if I’m not mistaken [during practice], so it’s going to be a bit of a learning process. But with the car we have, it doesn’t matter which tyres we use because we have a very quick car in general so I am confident we can stay where we are. I’m very excited to drive again.’
