Hosting Multiplayer - 1 PC or 2 Needed?

If I wanted to host a multiplayer session, can I host and play, using the same PC, or do I need to have two computers, one to host and another for play?

So just be be certain I'm not misunderstanding, one can host AND play the game on the same machine?
Yes. (But depending on your router, there can be some faff involved with having the server on the same public IP number as the game.)
I think the last time I raced with a friend, he ran the server (i.e. not me, but it was a while ago), but I'm pretty certain it was on the same box as the game.

What makes you ask?

Thanks, gents.

Why I asked is that I’m struggling to find a community that I don't have to pay for (only to discover it’s not my thing; I’m very new to simracing) and it would be nice to play with some friends whom I won’t have to worry about being unfair, or quite unpleasant when things go wrong, so I’m looking into what it takes to have a private server, without added cost of another pc.

@MB190E where are you based. I’m sure we can recommend so really good ACC racing groups that have same very clean racing. I personally race on about 10 different groups servers here in NZ/Aussie all the time and always good racing. If they are public (non passworded) there is always someone around to kick high ping and bad drivers.

That’s a very kind offer, @Günthar Rowe. I’m in the eastern time zone in North America.

I’ll admit I have some trepidation, as I mentioned I am new and learning to be a better simracer, but I’m far from good at all, I’m sure. As a yardstick, on Monza, where I’ve played the most, I’ve managed 1:54 as my best time ever and only once at that! I can regularly do 1:56 which probably is laughable. I struggle with chicanes terribly.

If a group really only wants to race I’ll be a poor participant and possibly a hazard. But with others who have a spot of patience and interest in helping me get better, it would be a fun experience.

Another thing is finding a car that you are actually fast (for you) in and not so much the car you like the most
This.

It dosnt matter what your favourite car is if it dosnt suit you or your driving style you`ll be chasing your tail all day long, spend some time in all the cars, you will know in a few laps if you are going to like it or be able to drive it competently, just as important as the car is practice, practice and when you dont think you can practice anymore, practice.

Yes, very much so! I have 30 hours now in ACC. And it did not take long to work out that the car I thought I wanted to drive was not the best fit for me. I thought I'd be zipping along in The Audi, or the Porsche, or the AMG. The last one is my second best fit. I tried the others of course, and the one non-German car that interested me was the GTR. Ugh. Not what I expected at all and I quite don't enjoy driving it.

My hands-down easily best driven car was never on my list of cars I was interested in: the Ferrari 488. :whistling:

Now don't get me wrong, Ferraris are very very fine cars, they just were not something that I found interesting for a number of decades. IRL I've been driving German cars for quite a few years, and love them. So this was not what I expected at all...
