For sharper textures I use the Texture Filtering settings here:
I took a hint from an iRacing change some time ago that magically sharpened up textures incredibly basically for free. I think they just enabled an NVIDIA setting like I'm doing here.

I think i'll try these since the HQ patch does not seem to play well with the steam versionOr try Scorpyo/SIDstalker/MRW mods to really get nice graphics

The important steps regard the EXE files, patching them properly, and setting compatbility modes.
The biggest issue is when i alt tab the game essentially freezes not sure what i am doing wrong could this be the problem?It does, no issues over here, just follow the instructions.

Yeah, that's fullscreen mode, it's like that for any game.
Run the video config (GTR2Config.exe) and set Windowed mode. Alt-tabbing will be as easy as any other window's app.
You may want to use the Borderless Gaming app (free) in windowed mode in case you want to get rid of borders, hide the taskbar, etc. I use it with great success.

because you did not read my readme in HQ Anniversary Patch :1) it is clearly written at the top of readme that you MUST READ THE README+INSTALL.TXT because all answers are here
2) it is clearly written that ENBSeries HDR plugin breaks windows ALT-TAB and I also written the solution...read the anniversary patch readme and you will know how to restore win alt-tab.

update i just extracted everything to the GTR2 folder now i need to figure out this one final part
update i just deleted the ENB series file i think i got this right nope that just makes it crash LOL.

It is not detailed in install.txt but in anniversary_readme.txt at ENBSeries section where I said that ENBSeries was made for GTA San Andreas and not for GTR2 and it breaks windows Alt-Tab : if windows Alt-Tab is most important for you in GTR2 than HDR graphics then delete d3d9.dll
Moreover if you want to keep XD+MAP PLUGINS with the presets combos 7z archives I have made then just rename d3d9_GTR2MAPLUGIN.dll as new d3d9.dll

I am guessing installing mods with the updated GTR2 is the same as vanila?

I use Nvidia DSR feature and set resolution at 1440p, on 1080p screen it gives me clear image without jaggies. If it's not enough you can set it to 4k but I find 1440p to be good enough. Performance is good as well. I only have a stutter from time to time, where the game stops for a moment but I think it happens on 1080p as well.
I'm using DSR 4.0. It looks a lot better to me. No jaggies in the distance.
I get good frame rates in the daylight but it takes a hit during night races....
