Just got an extra 30 fps...

Forgive me for stating the bleeding obvious;
but i have always known, assumed, that app’s cause you
to loose some Fps, at a guess i would have said 4 or 5.
and as i am hoping for 144hz, 4 or 5 is neither here nore there.

So i was so shocked to find i had lost approximately 30 fps.
So now i am running just sidekick and Realtime, both of
these app’s give me most of the information i need for online
racing. I can still use the useful app’s in practice and qualifying.

I am sure most of you except “me” knew this, so i have put
this on the forum for those who maybe did not realise how
much effect these multiple app’s with driver labels can have.

I realise it may just be something that applies to my system
and someone running 1080p may not incur this penalty.
But VR maybe another matter, i have noticed people with
VR sometimes running loads of app’s.

Silverstone GP circuit , GT3 , 24 AI.

i5 6600k not clocked
Gtx 980ti not clocked
Mini itx
5760 x 1080 144hz triple screens

( i do not use Nvidia inspectors settings apart from MFFA )
so AC settings =
2x AA
16x Anisotropic
World detail = high
Shadows = low
No post processing
Smoke generation = low
Mirror resolution = high
Reflection quality = low frequency = static.

“ Full display my many of apps on screen + teamspeak + crew-chief.”
i have always run lots of app’s plus name tags on opponents cars.

Fps start line = 60
Fps after one lap = 72

Just teamspeak + crewchief + realtime app + FFB app + sidekick app.

Fps start line = 90
Fps after one lap = 102

30 fps, not bad, it would equal me getting an RTX2080
which i have been considering.

May help somebody. On the other hand it may not help anyone:):geek:

Digging into the cpu limitations of assetto corsa I spotted that there are basically two threads, but one of them using quite some higher amount of cpu usage!
When I played around with apps, AI and the reflection settings, I spotted that they all increase the cpu load of the already higher threat.

With my gtx 1070 and single 1080p monitor my gpu limit is somewhere at 160+ fps most of the times. However if I disable vsync, the fps only go up to about 130 fps, clearly being limited by my I7 2600k @ 4.4 GHz.
I'm even dropping below 60 fps during race starts in online races!

When I disable all apps and disable driver names I'm staying above 100 fps during starts!

What was astonishing was when I went on track in single player practice, alone on track. Sidekick, helicorsa, tyres, laptimes and substanding lowered my fps by about 50 percent!

I optimized my apps and graphic settings (shadows, reflections, rendering distances of reflections and mirrors etc) until I'm now barely dropping sub 60 fps during starts. However I disable substanding for them and only re-activate it after some laps.

Sadly substanding is the only app showing everyone connected to the server no matter if a time got put in or whatever. Also it's the only app that displays the full driver names.
Combined with the really neat transparent design it's the absolute perfect app to maintain overview while hosting an event.

Thanks for this thread Ernie! That you creates this thread shows that there are people who don't know this yet. Although I probably have written about it 10+ times, it's good to have a dedicated thread again instead of just lose posts somewhere in some theads :)

I can"t use any app in VR without incurring severe fps penalty.
I believe this is mostly font rendering issue,
X4fab was trying to address that in his shaders, but they add some other hard to swallow in VR overhead.

What is the method for disabling apps? The CM ? Or simply not having the app on screen means it deactivated ? Perhaps I'm over thinking this, hahhaa

The latter. If they are not on screen the apps are not active

Maybe it's placebo but I found that if an app kills 20 fps while being displayed, it still eats about 2 fps while not being displayed.
Since most apps only kill about 2-5 fps it's marginal when they aren't displayed but if you got a big one, better disable it in the options completely.

Rasmus what a well timed statement, just thinking the same thing.

my main-T is at approximately 92% with or without apps. With fps at 90.
If i then repeat with the “1 Ai” the main_T drops to 35% and fps shoots up to 144 ( i have it capped
there anyway.)

Will follow your link tomorrow and check that out.

@Kek700 lower your anisotropic filtering to 8x and you'll get another big boost with even better visuals (I know, seems absurd but that's how AF works in Assetto, 8 is better than 16)

Yes i just tried this and got an extra 2 fps and a better image.

Well, thats a pretty good system, certainly better than mine and as already
described in post No 10, i can get 144hz at 5760x1080.
So there is something drastically wrong there. do you use nvidia inspector. If so what are
your settings. You could mimic my setting in the first post.

Also what are you using for monitors?

nvidia inspector?? :O_o:

My simple little mind craves simplicity, content manager and oculus rift
are a bridge too far for me, you will need the assistance of someone
else.

Just one point i picked up in the forum chat, i think there is a setting
that forces 45 fps. What it is i cannot remember. Probably got it wrong.
but anyway someone will chime in i am sure

You have provided a decent amount of information though.

I tried the oculus tray tool with ASW auto.. but it doesn't seems to have any impact on perfomance

If you have asw on auto or in it will go with either 90 fps or 45, nothing in between.
You need to monitor your graphics card load and test. If it's not at over 90% then it is your processor that it's limiting.
It's difficult to determine it with locked fps as your limit will probably be at around 85 fps with your PC specs.... Can you disable asw and suffer the tearing and stuttering for some short period to run the exact fps your PC is able to run at and monitor your loads?
I know that a friend of mine couldn't run ac in VR at 90+ fps with an i7 4790 @ 4.9 GHz!
With his 8700k at 4.8 GHz however it's possible without problems...
