Kind of a dumb question, but i'm just curious

Been doing most of my racing over the past month or so with either the GT4 mod cars or some of the recently released modern GT3 cars. This morning I decided to make up a race using all of the original GT3 cars released with the game instead because I missed my beloved Z4. First thing I noticed was that my GPU memory usage was significantly lower. I imagine that is due to most stock cars using 2k skins and the modern mod cars using 4k. What I didn't understand was why my framerates were almost 25 fps higher. Same track, same graphical settings, only difference is the cars used.

What is it about the mod cars that would make such a huge difference in framerates? Do mod cars use more advanced physics than the stock cars. Would the complexity of the car models effect fps? I wouldn't think it would be due to the skin sizes since even using 4k skins, I don't max out my GPU memory.

Like I said, dumb question, but the nerd in me is curious.

Don’t quote me on this but it’s likely something to do with LODs.

I did a quick search and found:https://assettocorsamods.net/threads/lods-what-is-the-best-approach.1065/

That makes sense and could be what it is. Maybe the mod cars don't have LOD's or don't have really optimized LOD's. Or maybe the car models these guys are able to make are so advanced that even the LOD's are very complex. So far i'm not running into any performance issues so it's no big deal. I just like to learn how\why things work the way they do and this one had me wondering.

Thanks for the input.

EDIT: You got me curious about the LOD thing, so I went through the list of cars I use in my modern GT3 races and saw that a couple of them did not have LODs, so you might be on to something. I'm going to do a race without the cars that don't have LODs and see if my fps increases. If it does, you may be right. Wish I knew more about this stuff to know how to make LODs for the cars that don't have them if it turns out to be the problem.

It's probably a mixture of all of those things. SOme of the modded GT3s may have too many triangles, some may not use LODs and some may use higher res textures. Some of the Kunos GT3s are very old models, like the Z4 or the GTR, which use less trianlges then the newer Kunos GT3s.

Basically the modded GT3 are badly optimized, which is a common theme with ripped mods.
