Lane scanning for mesh and texture creation

I came across an electrical engineering students Youtube channel when searching for something entirely unrelated who has created his own scripts that detect lanes like cars with auto-pilot do.

It got me thinking that this would also be a useful tool if adapted for modders and game designers to quickly and easily generate an accurate vertex mesh and a set of highly detailed textures for simulators and more open world maps such as in the Forza Horizon series. This way changes in road texture such as at 0:20 would be more accurately mapped and give a more realistic effect.

This post was meant to be more food for thought and open for discussion about whether this would actually be useful or maybe this already exists and I'm living under a rock :D.
