Oculus CV1 / Simracing Titles GTX 1080 Vs GTX 1070

Hey guys, I go on/off the boil for VR and as my fun money is limited at this time, what would of been a must try it or instant purchase a short while back is no longer as simple with my current financial limitations. Basically I need to know the money spent isn't wasted on a sorta okay experience. I'm aware of the pixelation but I am more concerned about general framerates and hassle involved getting these up and running.

Having sold my consoles and built a PC last summer with respectable (i7 @4.6Ghz /GTX 1070) I am curious to just how capable the 1070 performs in VR. While I know the 1080 is a good on average 20 FPS faster than the, 1070 in 1920x1080. With some titles running at 4K resolution the performance gap seems to drop to as little as 5-10 FPS advantage.

What I cant find is a good comparison between the 1070 / 1080 based on framerates or differences for the best performing racing titles with VR. I assume these to be i-racing, Assetto Corsa, Dirt Rally?

Any experience or advice appreciated and also on the issue with these at the current time.

Hello mate,

I have a 980ti and the CV1 and I must say it is, for me at least, an essential piece of kit for those wanting a more immersive experience.

Since I bought a used CV1 for £400 a couple of months back I quite simply cannot go back to my previous triple screen setup anymore, it's just that good!

Performance wise I have found the 980ti to be more than good enough for the job and I can run Assetto Corsa (my go to VR game) with nice and high settings, including increasing the file value for pixilation (sorry I forget what its called) in AC up to 3.0 from its standard 1.0. The graphics look good to me, and the "screen door" effect is something I got used to very very quickly indeed.

What you lose on overall graphical quality you more than make up for by "being in the car" when using VR.

In AC with good graphics settings I can run a nice full grid offline and online without stutters and butter smooth. Because of some of the tech employed in the Rift running at 45fps is fine and feels plenty smooth, this is coming from my who is a bit of an FPS snob and can't stand anything less than a perfect experience.

I would say, in my honest opinion, if you can afford to go VR then it is well worth making the jump. Only "issue" I suppose you could say would be it's very unappealing to go back to non VR games once you've been bitten by the bug!

Assetto Corsa is great in VR, PCARS does a good job too, as does DiRT Rally. RaceRoom has an early implementation that I have yet to try (due to being away from the rig because of an op) and rF2 will be getting VR shortly. I believe Reiza are looking at it medium to short term too for AMS and of course their new 'Reiza 2017' game.

Oh one other thing to add, I'm pretty much a turd when it comes to technical stuff and even I found it nice and straightforward to get it all setup and running pretty easily. Even if you find it a struggle (which I doubt you will) there is a wealth of information out on the internet that will guide you through getting the most from your experience.

It took me about a week or so to get fully used to it and able to run long periods without feeling adverse effects, and now I can keep it on for as long as I wish and have no problems.

So in short mate, it's awesome and I reckon with a 1070 or 1080 you should have tons of GPU power to have a good experience. I'm certainly not limited by my ageing 980ti anyway.

Good luck in whatever you decide mate, just make sure you don't spread yourself too thin financially that's the only advice that matters :)

Cheers

Thanks Paul for the info, I am excited for that (in the car sensation) and do see a few guys with 1070 using VR but wondering if anyone can shed any light on the what 1080 brings compared to the 1070. Is there a way/chance some of you guys here @RD can compare like/like settings and framerates?

If the difference is more like 5-10 frames in VR I assume you can also drop some graphical setting that is taxing to pull it back but if it's greater than 10 frames then the question is should I wait to see what happens with the next range of GPU models.

I don't know if the framerate will affect me personally motion sick wise till I get it hence part of the caution and I am a sucker if doing or seeking something to possibly even hold off to ensure a high performance from it.

Well if you find yourself in the South Yorkshire area I'd be happy to have you over for a bit to give it a go, just drop me a PM mate :)

Wouldn't be possible for us at RD to run a test as we don't really have a hardware review team sadly :( Have you looked at the usual stuff like GPU Benchmark ?

@Andy Jackson I could not recommend it enough mate, it's a real game changer.

Your a star Paul and very generous. I'm in Norn Ireland so a bit far off for me. :)
Have you ever tried an Ulster Fry, your welcome to pop over for free bed n breakfast (lol)

Is it just me but it's hard to find GPU benchmarks/reviews that focus on "Racing Titles" or provide good comparisons and especially with VR.That's the type of thing you would think channels like ISR would specialise in but they don't seem to be that up on the tech side of things for video cards or audio.

Maybe someone has seen a similar discussion on other forums or an owner that has had both but I kinda want to know just how far off 1070 is with mainly Assetto Corsa.

Currently as a 1080p gamer looking to migrate to 4K (HDR) display at some point too. The 1070 was worth going above the 1060 model and certainly fitted the bill. However, 1080 to me wasn't worth the current £200 difference when seeing its 4K benchmarks to 1070.

Thanks again for replies I do see VR being a big part of my cockpit and compliment Simvibe immersion.

Wow!
I just installed my new GTX1070 and simply 'cranked' every slider in Assetto Corsa to maximum...every single slider.
I am floored by the difference, over what is a respectable GTX970.
I ran three test...two before removing the GTX970 and another after installing the GTX1070.
All test were done at the same resolution...the only difference being that one of the 970 test was done at PCIe 2.0 instead of PCIe 3.0.
That darn GTX1070 is a 'monster' on single screen.

I run a 1070 with i7 6700 with the CV1 and it does a really good job. AC runs great for me with full settings and iracing runs at 90fps full settings. Given the price diff between the 1070 and 1080 i cannot justify the 1080 now unless you have money to burn. When the CV1 is upgraded in 2018? I would look at a better card but now the 1070 does a great job.

Do you know what ResolutionScale are you using wit iRacing?

Yes, it's a kind of oversampling used on the HMD, it sets how many pixels are rendered vs physical pixels in the display. With the CV1 you can use either the Oculus Debug Tool, and set the Pixels per Display Pixel value. Or, in-game settings / startup values, which more titles are starting to use.

I had the 980Ti until about month ago, when it blew and took my full system out. Now using a i5 7600K @4.8GHz and GTX 1070... runs every VR race title pretty much faultlessly. Was hoping to get a 1080Ti, but it appears Nvidia are going to be launching the 20xx series earlier than planed. Going to hold out for the GTX2080.

Nvidia Volta ... Linky ... Rumoured for Q3 2017 rather than 2018.

It's still way to early to tell if the new series will push forward as much as the 10xx series has, with the 1070 being the equivalent of the 980Ti. The current 1080Ti is a very powerful card, and ideal for VR.

Possibly just a refresh with quicker memory, higher clock speeds and more energy efficient ... The GTX 1080 has already had a 11Gbit/s GDDR5X memory refresh.

TBH, reading the early info, the 1080Ti might still be king until a 2080Ti appears.

I'm running i7 7700k (no oc) gtx 1070 16gb ddr4. basically everything max on iracing and I'm at a steady 90 fps... to me its worth it... the only thing that is blurry is small text but your racing not reading a book lol

VR may be more CPU dependant then I would have thought, I have a 1070 but only a i5 3570k overclocked to 4.3, I'm more towards medium settings and usually have to turn in asw to get stable frames.

From an experience perspective I would have to rate I racing the best.
