I got an ASRock Z170 motherboard and some Corsair DDR4-3866 RAM, so I could do some science on my i5 6500 (non-K).
Below is a list of configurations for the Z170 and average FPS from AC benchmarking tool with all setting in AC set to minimum (to take the GTX 750ti out of the equation as much as possible. I run my monitor at 1920x822 (ultrawide aspect on a 1080p monitor).
RAM at 2133 and CPU at stock 100Mhz (very similar to previous build)
Avg FPS 88
RAM at 3866 and CPU at stock 100Mhz
Avg FPS 93.3
RAM at 2667 and CPU at 115Mhz
Avg FPS 91.6
RAM at 2666 and CPU at 125Mhz
Avg FPS 109
RAM at 2800 and CPU at 131Mhz (roughly 4.2 Ghz)
Avg FPS 112.3
After adding some AA and increasing textures to medium benchmarking was around the 106-108 range. When I was watching replay footage from Zandvoort (league race with ~30 cars) FPS was averaging in the mid 70's, sometimes dipping into 60's, sometimes up into 80's.
Text from AC benchmark file:

This YouTube video talks about how to using the BCLK to overclocked a non-K (locked) intel chip:
