Programmable keypad as button box?

I'm thinking of using a programmable keypad as a button box, like this one ($170!).

The advantage of using a programmable keypad is that it does not present itself as a controller (some games have a 3 controller limit). You just program the most frequently used keys on it, so like D for Drives names, Y for Yes, N for No etcetera. And it can be placed easily because it's small.
Does anyone know a similar product which is cheaper? Perhaps a DIY Arduino project...?

You could have a much cheaper solution.
Take a regular USB Keypad.
Like this one.

You can do all the programming in the controller settings of your sim.
Assign the functions to the keys.
Put some coloured stickers on the keys.
Make you own sticker with text, print it, cut it on the size.
And your good to go!

Would a game see these keys as the same that are on a USB keyboard or would these be seen as completely separate and additional keys?

Hey Andrew, Look around for Pre made "Grids" for the games you play, You can also "borrow" the button style's and look from the Pre made grids and make up your Own for a game that might not have a pre made Grid.
