Question about dongles and ethernet extension cables.

@Simberia
OK so currently i have a whole room to myself, my wife keeps nagging me about it and i am not sure i can keep her at bay much longer.

Simply, i have my PC and gear connected to the Virgin hub direct with a short ethernet cable.
I get about 200-280 mbs on speed test.

My other PC has a dongle and gets 50mbs

So if i move my gaming PC to another spare room if i used a 10-20 meter ethernet cable would i still loose some of that 200-280 mbs?

Or failing that is there better dongles which could give me about that wirelessly?

thanks.

Maximum run for Cat 5e is 100 meters. A run from your PC to the router should be no problem. Data transfer speed will be about the same over a wired connection regardless of distance.

Wireless is a different ball game. Data transfer speed depends on many factors: distance, WiFi band, number of WiFi access points nearby, wireless router hardware and building material. In addition to the slower transfer speed latency will be higher on a wireless connection.

If it's possible run an ethernet connection. You will be much happier, especially when updating your sim software.

This.

If running an Ethernet cable is not an option, powerline may be a solution? Will depend how good your electrical wiring is, I use it here but my long term plan is to change that when I come to re-decorating. It's a solid solution for me, the run is short and it's faster than using Wi-Fi.

another spare room
If those rooms have TV cable, consider MoCA,
specifically Action-tec adapters are often cheap used.
Any splitters between rooms want to be MoCA-rated.

Ethernet is by far the best option. However if that's impractical I'd suggest looking at mesh wifi.

I have a netgear orbi pair and get 250Mb where the virgin wifi didn't even reach.
