I would like to run old worn engine parts in free practise and then change them before qualify. Is this possible or do i get a penalty then or not enough time to change the parts?

Should work. At least in MyTeam it works. I always change all parts before entering the practice session and change all parts back at the end of the last 2nd FP (bc I need good parts for quali performance mission).
Funny enough, even though it takes over 40 min to change all parts, the game does not count the time up into the next session. So when driving out in FP3, all parts were changed back.
As long as you change parts before quali, it's fine.
