Real world car question

Long story, but my 12 year old focus estate expired yesterday in an electrical meltdown that I think has taken out the ECU, alternator and goodness knows what else. It owes me nothing as it's done 140000 miles and is beyond economic repair.

Thankfully, I've been saving for a new car and almost have enough for a new model focus estate (albeit a couple of years old).

My question is, should I go petrol or diesel?

My commute is a good 60 mile round trip, and I am hoping to get a 900kg caravan next year (swift Basecamp for you caravan types).

Common sense points to diesel, but there is a niggle in the back of my mind that the UK government will tax diesel to death in the next few years.

Tow car comparisons suggest a 1.5 diesel or 1.5 petrol are both a pretty good match to tow the caravan I want. So I'm a bit torn.

Any opinions guys? Incidentally, the new focus estate has more load space than a Mondeo estate...
